Wind Jet

Wind Jet S.p.A., was an Italian low-cost airline based in Catania, Italy. It was founded in 2003, following the disbandment of "Air Sicilia", by current CEO Antonino Pulvirenti, also owner of football team Calcio Catania. On 11 August 2012 the airline ceased operations until further notice due to financial troubles. At that time it was the third-largest Italian airline by passenger numbers, and operated national and European flights primarily from its hub in Catania.

History

Windjet was established in 2003 and started operations on 17 June 2003. It is 100% owned by the Finaria Group.

On 25 January 2012, Alitalia declared they would start a merger with Wind Jet, as well as with Blue Panorama, another Italian airline. On 12 April 2012, Alitalia chose to pursue the acquisition of the sole Wind Jet with a cash payment between 20 and 30 million €, abandoning the project of merger with Blue Panorama Airlines.

By the end of July 2012, the Italian antitrust authority granted Alitalia to acquire Wind Jet, but in return Alitalia would have to give up slots on domestic key routes. Faced with this, Alitalia cancelled the plans a few days later in August 2012. As a result, the cash-strapped airline suspended all flights on 11 August 2012, faced with losing their air operators certificate, leaving 300,000 passengers stranded. The Italian authorities tried to prompt Alitalia for an acquisition of Wind Jet, but they could not prompt Alitalia to acquire the grounded airline.

Jet (fluid)

A jet is a stream of fluid that is projected into a surrounding medium, usually from some kind of a nozzle, aperture or orifice. Jets can travel long distances without dissipating. In the Earth's atmosphere there exist jet streams that travel thousands of kilometres.

Jet fluid has higher momentum compared to the surrounding fluid medium. In the case where the surrounding medium is assumed to be made up of the same fluid as the jet, and this fluid has a viscosity, than the surrounding fluid near the jet is assumed to be carried along with the jet by a process called entrainment.

Some animals, notably cephalopods, use a jet to propel themselves in water. Similarly, a jet engine as it name suggests, emits a jet used to propel rockets, aircraft, jetboats, and submarines.

Ground Control (Jet) is a 1998 disaster thriller film directed by Richard Howard and starring Kiefer Sutherland, Bruce McGill, Kristy Swanson, and Robert Sean Leonard. The film also features a cameo by former baseball player Steve Sax in the role of an airline co-pilot.

Plot

Chicago air traffic controller Jack Harris (Kiefer Sutherland) was cleared of liability for an ill-fated flight under his authority which resulted in the loss of all 174 souls aboard. He subsequently left the job and went on to design air control software, until five years later when T.C. Bryant (Bruce McGill), his ex-colleague who had since transferred to Phoenix, pleads for help on New Year's Eve, due to a critical staff shortage and with torrential weather predicted.

Jack's return to the control room is met with both warmth and disdain, particularly when he experiences flashbacks of the crash. The atmosphere rapidly becomes much more serious as the storm approaches and, with the control tower suffering power cuts, the team is forced into manually directing busy air traffic through severe turbulence.

Greek and Roman tradition

Air is one of the four classical elements in ancient Greek philosophy and science. According to Plato, it is associated with the octahedron; air is considered to be both hot and wet. The ancient Greeks used two words for air: aer meant the dim lower atmosphere, and aether meant the bright upper atmosphere above the clouds.Plato, for instance writes that "So it is with air: there is the brightest variety which we call aether, the muddiest which we call mist and darkness, and other kinds for which we have no name...." Among the early Greek Pre-Socratic philosophers, Anaximenes (mid-6th century BCE) named air as the arche. A similar belief was attributed by some ancient sources to Diogenes Apolloniates (late 5th century BCE), who also linked air with intelligence and soul (psyche), but other sources claim that his arche was a substance between air and fire.Aristophanes parodied such teachings in his play The Clouds by putting a prayer to air in the mouth of Socrates.

WIND Hellas, formerly STET Hellas, is an integrated telecommunications provider with headquarters in Athens, Greece. WIND is the 3rd largest mobile operator in Greece (after Cosmote and Vodafone) with more than 4.4 million active subscribers (September 2010).

Origins

STET Hellas originated in 1992 with the establishment of TELESTET, a subsidiary of the Italian company STET, now Telecom Italia. On September 30, 1992 the Greek Ministry of Transport and Communications issued a license to STET to create a national mobile telephony services network (GSM). The company invested the sum of 30 billion drachmas (about 88 million Euros) to create the network. This constituted one of the biggest investments in Greece since the end of the Second World War. Commercial operation started on June 29, 1993 when the first call from a mobile phone took place in the country.

In 1998 TELESTET was the first Greek mobile telephony company to be listed in international stock markets, the NASDAQ in New York City and the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.
