Wim Mook

Willem Gerrit "Wim" Mook (10 July 1932 – 24 January 2016) was a Dutch isotope physicist.

Mook was born on 10 July 1932 in Groningen. He obtained his doctorate at the University of Groningen in 1968, with a dissertation titled:Geochemistry of the stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of natural waters in the Netherlands. He was a lecturer of isotope physics at the same university between 1975 and 1979. Starting the next year he was professor of isotope physics, until his retirement in 1997. From 1986 he also served as professor at the VU University Amsterdam.

Mook was director of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research from 1990 to 1996.

In 1985 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He died on 24 January 2016 in Haren.

Windows Imaging Format

The Windows Imaging Format (WIM) is a file-based disk image format. It was developed by Microsoft to help deploy Windows Vista and subsequent versions of Windows operating system family, as well as Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs.

Design

Like other disk image formats, a WIM file contains a set of files and associated filesystem metadata. However, unlike sector-based formats (such as ISO or VHD), WIM is file-based: The fundamental unit of information in a WIM is a file.

The primary advantages of being file-based is hardware independence and single-instance storage of a file referenced multiple times in the filesystem tree. Since the files are stored inside a single WIM file, the overhead of opening and closing many individual files is reduced. The cost of reading or writing many thousands of individual files on the local disk is negated by hardware and software-based disk caching as well as sequential reading and writing of the data.

WIM files can contain multiple disk images, which are referenced either by their numerical index or by their unique name. Due to the use of single-instance storage, the more each successive disk image has in common with previous images added to the WIM file, the less new data will be added. A WIM can also be split (spanned) into multiple parts, which have the .swm extension.

Mook (publishing)

A mook /mʊk/ is a publication which is physically similar to a magazine but is intended to remain on bookstore shelves for longer periods than traditional magazines.

The term is a portmanteau of "magazine" and "book". It was first used in 1971, at a convention of the Fédération Internationale de la Presse Périodique. The format has become particularly popular in Japan, where several fashion designers publish "brand mooks" to promote their products.

American examples of mooks include Make and Craft.

Mob (video gaming)

A mob, mobile or monster is a computer-controlled non-player character (NPC) in a computer game such as an MMORPG or MUD. Depending on context, every and any such characters in a game may be considered to be a "mob", or usage of the term may be limited to hostile NPCs and/or NPCs vulnerable to attack. Common usage refers to either a single character or a multitude of characters in a group as a mob. In most modern graphical games, "mob" may be used to specifically refer to generic monstrous NPCs that the player is expected to hunt and kill, excluding NPCs that engage in dialog or sell items or who cannot be attacked. "Named mobs" are distinguished by having a proper name rather than being referred to by a general type ("a goblin," "a citizen," etc.). "Dumb mobs" are those capable of no complex behaviors beyond attacking or moving around.

Purpose of mobs

Defeating mobs may be required to gather experience points, money, items, or to complete quests. Combat between player characters (PCs) and mobs is called player versus environment (PvE). PCs may also attack mobs because they aggressively attack PCs. Monster versus monster (MvM) battles also take place in some games.
