Classical High School

Classical High School, founded in 1843, is a public magnet school in the Providence School District, in Providence, Rhode Island. It was originally an all-male school, but has since become co-ed. Classical's motto is Certare, Petere, Reperire, Neque Cedere, a Latin translation of the famous phrase taken from Tennyson's poem "Ulysses", "To Strive, to Seek, to Find, and Not to Yield". It has been rated "High Performing and Sustaining" by its performance in 2005 on the New Standards Reference Exam, placing third in the state. The school also made Newsweek's America's Best High Schools of 2012 with a 99% graduation rate, 95% college bound, an average SAT score of 1578, and an average AP score of 2.8. Classical High School stands roughly at the intersection of the Federal Hill, West End, and Upper South Providence neighborhoods.

Lynn Classical High School

Lynn Classical High School is a high school in the city of Lynn, Massachusetts. It is a part of Lynn Public Schools.

The school was once located off of the Lynn Commons, which building is now the Fecteau-Leary school. The high school was moved to O'Callaghan Way after the controversial construction of a new facility. The new facility has had to undergo massive reconstruction after it was discovered the building was literally sinking into the ground. It was a well-known fact that the new Classical was built on a former landfill, yet construction broke ground anyway.

Despite being situated in a decidedly urban environment, Classical has maintained a fairly strong track record, in terms of graduation rates and test scores. The school has been lauded in the past by publications such as U.S. News & World Report.

The school also has a strong athletic tradition, and is the school from which Harry Agganis graduated before blossoming into the world class athlete he became. In the main foyer, a mural of Agganis greets visitors to the school.

Terminology

The term "high school" originated in Scotland, with the world's oldest high school being Edinburgh's Royal High School from 1505. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, Boston Latin School founded in Boston, Massachusetts.

The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.

In Australia, high school is a secondary school, from Year 7 or Year 8 through to Year 12, varying from state to state. High school immediately follows primary (elementary) school; therefore, a Year-7 Australian high-school student is sometimes as young as 12. In Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, the term "high school" generally refers to Years 7–10, whereas the term "College" is used for Years 11–12. In Victoria the term "secondary college" has largely replaced the term "high school" following the reforms of the Labor Government in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some schools have retained the name "high school" (such as Melbourne High School) and many have now dropped the "secondary" and are simply known as "college".

Secondary education in the United States

In most jurisdictions, secondary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school.

History

The United States historically had a demand for general skills rather than specific training/apprenticeships. High school enrollment increased when schools at this level became free, laws required children to attend until a certain age, and it was believed that every American student had the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability.

In 1892, in response to many competing academic philosophies being promoted at the time, a working group of educators, known as the "Committee of Ten" was established by the National Education Association. It recommended twelve years of instruction, consisting of eight years of elementary education followed by four years of high school. Rejecting suggestions that high schools should divide students into college-bound and working-trades groups from the start, and in some cases also by race or ethnic background, they unanimously recommended that "every subject which is taught at all in a secondary school should be taught in the same way and to the same extent to every pupil so long as he pursues it, no matter what the probable destination of the pupil may be, or at what point his education is to cease."

Woodrow Wilson Classical High School

Woodrow Wilson Classical High School is a secondary school in Long Beach, California. It is part of the Long Beach Unified School District and opened in 1926.

Overview

Woodrow Wilson Classical High School was established in 1925 as the second school in the city, and ultimately opened for classes in 1926.

In 2005 Woodrow Wilson High School was recognized as a California Distinguished School for the second time. The school is a "classical" high school, in that it exceeds LBUSD standards and requires additional credits in order to graduate. Former Wilson students and their teacher Erin Gruwell also inspired the movie Freedom Writers, that was made of the collected diaries of the students.

Woodrow Wilson was also the film site for Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 as they love to talk about so much. Future filming here will include Good Will Hunting 2: Back to High School, Anchorman 3: Yes We Are Making Another One, and The Shining 4

Wilson/Whitney InvenTeam

In April 2009, the Wilson Engineering Club received a $10,000 grant from the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam program. They invented a wind power generation system for semi-tractor trailer trucks. The wind turbine, installed on the roof of the truck's cab, will generate electricity while the truck is in motion, and then store that electricity in a battery system for use when the truck is parked. The goal of the project is to provide truck drivers the ability to meet the parked power needs of their cabs without having to idle their engines and burn fossil fuels.
