William Harvey

William Harvey (1 April 1578 – 3 June 1657) was an English physician who made seminal contributions in anatomy and physiology. He was the first known to describe completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the brain and body by the heart, though earlier writers, such as Realdo Colombo, Miguel Servet (aka Michael Servetus, Michel de Villeneuve) in: 'Restitutio Christianismi', Paris, 1546, and Jacques Dubois, had provided precursors of the theory. After his death the William Harvey Hospital was constructed in the town of Ashford, several miles from his birthplace of Folkestone.

Family

William's father, Thomas Harvey, was a jurat of Folkestone where he served the office of mayor in 1600. Records and personal descriptions delineate him as an overall calm, diligent, and intelligent man whose "sons... revered, consulted and implicitly trusted in him... (they) made their father the treasurer of their wealth when they acquired great estates...(He) kept, employed, and improved their gainings to their great advantage." Thomas Harvey's portrait can still be seen in the central panel of a wall of the dining-room at Rolls Park, Chigwell, in Essex. William was the eldest of nine children, seven sons and two daughters, of Thomas and his wife Joan Halke. Notable family connections include Heneage Finch, 1st Earl of Nottingham, who married William's niece Elizabeth Harvey, and the diplomat Sir Daniel Harvey.

William Harvey (officer of arms)

William Harvey (1510 – 1567) was an English officer of arms.

Born June 1510 to Turner and Mary Harvey in Ashill, Somerset. He had a brother Thomas Harvey of London, whose daughter Audrey Harvey married William Jefferay. According to the Dictionary of National Biography William Harvey became a junior officer of the college of arms and was appointed the Bluemantle Pursuivant in ordinary on 18 June 1536. Under this title he accompanied William Paget on an embassy visit to France. After this he was awarded the Somerset Herald coat of arms. Under this title he was recorded as being the only officer of arms to attend the funeral of Catherine Queen dowager of King Henry VIII.

In 1549 he was appointed the Norroy King of arms by Edward VI. During this time he made an official visit to Germany. Most strikingly he was despatched to France on 7 June 1557 to declare war on behalf of Queen Mary.

William died in Thame, Oxfordshire, in 1567.

William Harvey (department store)

William Harvey was a department store located in Guildford and is House of Fraser Guildford.

History

William Harvey bought a general drapery store in Guildford in 1922 developing the business into a department store with a slant on fashion. In 1946 the business was incorporated and two years later moved into new premises opposite. However the move had put the company into financial problems, and in 1950 the business was offered to Harrods who declinded. In April 1951 the business was put into voluntary liquidation, with a new company by the same name being set up to operate the store.

The new company however did not stay independent for long, and in 1953 the expanding department store group Army & Navy purchased the business. The Guildford store was subsequently expanded by Army & Navy, who continued to operate William Harvey as a subsidiary, with five new floors and a roof garden. They also branded a new store located in Camberley Harveys which opened in 1964.

William Harvey (artist)

William Harvey (13 July 1796 – 1866) was an English engraver and designer.

Born at Newcastle upon Tyne, Harvey was the son of a bath-keeper. At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to Thomas Bewick, and became one of his favorite pupils. Bewick describes him as one "who both as an engraver & designer, stands preeminent" at his day (Memoir, p. 200). He engraved many blocks for Bewick's Aesop's Fables (1818).

Harvey moved to London in 1817, studying drawing with Benjamin Haydon, and anatomy with Charles Bell. In 1821, he engraved for Haydon on wood, in imitation of copper-plate, the large block of the Assassination of L. S. Dentatus. This was probably the then most ambitious block which had been cut in England.

Harvey switched to design, after the death of John Thurston, the then leading wood designer in London. One of his earliest works is his illustrations for Alexander Henderson's History of Ancient and Modern Wines in 1824.

His masterpieces are his illustrations to Northcote's Fables (1823–33) and to E. W. Lane's The Arabian Nights' Entertainments (1838-1840).

William Harvey (Canadian politician)

William Harvey (April 3, 1821 – June 14, 1874) was a Canadian political figure. He represented Elgin East in the Canadian House of Commons from 1872 to 1874 as a Liberal member.

He was born in Malahide Township, Elgin County, Upper Canada and was educated there. In 1848, he married a Miss Sophronia Mack. Harvey served on the town council for Malahide and the council for Malahide Township. He died in office after contracting smallpox during a visit to Ottawa in 1874 in Aylmer, Ontario.
