William Hanna

William Denby "Bill" Hanna (July 14, 1910 – March 22, 2001) was an American animator, director, producer, voice actor, and cartoon artist, whose film and television cartoon characters entertained millions of people for much of the 20th century.

After working odd jobs in the first months of the Depression, Hanna joined the Harman and Ising animation studio in 1930. During the 1930s, Hanna steadily gained skill and prominence while working on cartoons such as Captain and the Kids. In 1937, while working at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Hanna met Joseph Barbera. The two men began a collaboration that was at first best known for producing Tom and Jerry and live action/animated hybrid films. In 1957, they co-founded Hanna-Barbera, which became the most successful television animation studio in the business, producing programs such as The Flintstones, The Huckleberry Hound Show, The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, The Smurfs, and Yogi Bear. In 1967, Hanna–Barbera was sold to Taft Broadcasting for $12 million, but Hanna and Barbera remained heads of the company until 1991. At that time, the studio was sold to Turner Broadcasting System, which in turn was merged with Time Warner in 1996; Hanna and Barbera stayed on as advisors.

William Hanna (minister)

William Hanna LL.D., D.D. (1808–1882) was a Scottish minister, known as theological writer and the biographer of Thomas Chalmers, his father-in-law.

Life

Born at Belfast on 26 November 1808, he was the son of Samuel Hanna, a minister there of the Presbyterian Church of Ireland. He studied at the University of Glasgow, going on to the University of Edinburgh where he studied under Thomas Chalmers.

In 1834 Hanna was licensed as a probationer of the Church of Scotland, and was ordained to East Kilbride, a parish near Glasgow, on 17 September 1835. In 1837 he was translated to the parish of Skirling, Peebles-shire, near Biggar. During the controversy that preceded the Disruption of 1843, he took an active part on the side of Chalmers and his allies; and left the establishment, taking his congregation with him.

Having resigned his charge at Skirling, Hanna removed permanently to Edinburgh, where in 1850 he was called to be colleague to Thomas Guthrie, as minister of St. John's Free Church. He received in 1852 the degree of LL.D. from the university of Glasgow; in 1864 he was made D.D. by the university of Edinburgh. In 1866 he retired from the active duties of the ministry. He died in London, 24 May 1882.

Hanna City, Illinois

Hanna City is a village in Peoria County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,013 at the 2000 census. Hanna City is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Hanna City was founded in 1882 and named after William Hanna (born 1827), who was president of the Peoria-Farmington Railroad, which ran through Hanna City. While originally a farming community, coal was soon discovered under the town. The coal mine was a major factor in the early years of the town and kept it thriving for more than half a century. The main coal mine shaft was near the intersection of Second St and the railroad. Remnants of the coal mine can still be found, e.g., air shaft near old Grade School.

According to the 2010 census, Hanna City has a total area of 0.48 square miles (1.24 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,013 people, 398 households, and 300 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,123.8 people per square mile (814.8/km²). There were 437 housing units at an average density of 916.2 per square mile (351.5/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.24% White, 0.39% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 0.69% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.
