William Haines

Charles William "Billy" Haines (January 2, 1900 – December 26, 1973), known professionally as William Haines, was an American film actor and interior designer.

Haines was discovered by a talent scout and signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1922. His career gained momentum when he was loaned out to Columbia Pictures where he received favorable reviews for his role in The Midnight Express. Haines returned to MGM and was cast in the 1926 film Brown of Harvard. The role solidified his screen persona as a wisecracking, arrogant leading man. By the end of the 1920s, Haines had appeared in a string of successful films and was a popular box office draw.

His career was cut short by the 1930s due to his refusal to deny his homosexuality. Haines quit acting in 1935 and started a successful interior design business with his life partner Jimmie Shields, and was supported by friends in Hollywood. Haines died of lung cancer in December 1973 at the age of 73.

Early life

Haines was born on January 2, 1900 (he claimed he was born on January 1) in Staunton, Virginia, the third child of George Adam Haines, a cigar maker, and Laura Virginia Haines (née Matthews). Two older siblings died in infancy. He had four younger siblings: Lillian, born in 1902; Ann, born in 1907; George, Jr., born in 1908; and Henry, born in 1917. He was baptized at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton at the age of eight, where he later sang in the choir. He became fascinated with stage performance and motion pictures at an early age, spending hours watching early silent films in the local theatres.

Dr William Clark Haines (1810 – 3 February 1866), Australian colonial politician, was the first Premier of Victoria.

Haines was born in London, the son of John Haines, a physician. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated in medicine; he later practiced surgery for several years. In 1835 he married Mary Dugard, with whom he had nine children.

Haines migrated to the Port Phillip District (later Victoria) in 1841 and settled in the Geelong area. He farmed in the area as well as practising as a surgeon. He was appointed a member of the Victorian Legislative Council (then a partly elected, partly appointive body) in 1851, and in 1853 he was elected for district of Grant. He served as Colonial Secretary 1854-55. Politically, he represented the small farmers against the squatters who owned most of Victoria's land.

When Victoria gained full responsible government in 1855 Haines was leader of the Government. He was commissioned as Victoria's first Premier and Chief Secretary on 28 November 1855 and served until 11 March 1857. Haines was elected to the Legislative Assembly for South Grant in November 1856. Haines was again Premier from April 1857 to March 1858. Haines then visited Europe for three years. In 1860 he moved to the seat of Portland which he represented until 1864. Haines served as Treasurer from 14 November 1861 to 27 June 1863, in the third O'Shanassy government. He served again in the Legislative Council, representing Eastern Province, from August 1865 until his death in February 1866.

William Haines (6 April 1831 – 11 June 1902) was a South Australian politician affectionately known as the "King of Tea Tree Gully".

History

William Haines was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, and migrated to South Australia with his parents William Haines snr. (ca.1811 – 6 November 1863) and Jane Haines (née Cook) (1804 – 11 January 1862) and five younger siblings on the William Mitchell, arriving on 27 August 1840.

Their first accommodation was in "Emigration Square" (later to become the Hindmarsh police barracks) then in a settlement on North Terrace near Holy Trinity Church. His father found employment at the Government House vegetable garden, then became head gardener at the Botanic Gardens.

Around 1853 the family moved to Tea Tree Gully, where they set up a market garden. William was granted the license for the Highercombe Hotel adjacent to the family cottage. He was a popular host and successful publican, but shortly after the death of his wife Mary, transferred the license to his brother Ephraim. Two cottages and the orchard were disposed of. The hotel closed in 1878 and was bought by the Government the following year.

William Haines (21 June 1778 – 24 July 1848) was an English engraver and painter.

Early life

Haines was born at Bedhampton, Hampshire, on 21 June 1778; but taken in infancy to Chichester he always regarded that city as his native place. He was educated at the Midhurst grammar school, witnessing while there the destruction by fire of Cowdray House. Two years after that disaster he was with Thew, the engraver, at Northaw, Hertfordshire, where, when sufficiently proficient, he worked with Scriven and others on the Boydell-Shakespeare plates.

Travels

In 1800 he went to the Cape of Good Hope; his ship, outsailed by the convoy, successfully resisting on the voyage an attack by a French privateer. At Cape Town and in excursions up the country he made numerous drawings (Caffres, Hottentots, &c.), resembling Catlin's later American pictures. From the Cape he passed to Philadelphia, where he engraved a number of book illustrations (‘Johnson's Poets,’ ‘Bradford's British Classics,’ &c.) and some portraits (Drs. Barton and Rush, Sir W. Jones, Franklin, &c.).
