William Booth

William Booth (10 April 1829 – 20 August 1912) was a British Methodist preacher who founded The Salvation Army and became its first General (1878–1912). The Christian movement with a quasi-military structure and government founded in 1865 has spread from London, England, to many parts of the world and is known for being one of the largest distributors of humanitarian aid.

Conversion and early ministry

William Booth was born in Sneinton, Nottingham, the second son of five children born to Samuel Booth and his second wife, Mary Moss. Booth's father was relatively wealthy by the standards of the time, but during William's childhood, the family descended into poverty. In 1842, Samuel Booth, who could no longer afford his son's school fees, apprenticed the 13-year-old William Booth to a pawnbroker. Samuel Booth died on 23 September 1843.

Two years into his apprenticeship Booth was converted to Methodism. He then read extensively and trained himself in writing and in speech, becoming a Methodist lay preacher. Booth was encouraged to be an evangelist primarily through his best friend, Will Sansom. Sansom and Booth both began in the 1840s to preach to the poor and the sinners of Nottingham, and Booth would probably have remained as Sansom's partner in his new Mission ministry, as Sansom titled it, had Sansom not died of tuberculosis, in 1849.

William Booth (priest)

William James Booth CVO (3 February 1939 - 2 June 2009) was an Anglican priest and Prebendary of Westminster Abbey who served as a Chaplain to HM The Queen.

Early life

A descendant of Humphrey Booth of Dublin (see Gore-Booth), he was born in 1939 and educated at Ballymena Academy, County Antrim and Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated Bachelor of Arts (1960) proceeding Master of Arts (1975).

Career

Booth was ordained a deacon of the Church of Ireland in 1962 and a priest in 1963. His first appointment was as curate in St Luke's Parish, Belfast, from 1962 to 1964. From 1965 to 1974 he was Chaplain of Cranleigh School, Surrey, and from 1974 to 1991 he was Chaplain of Westminster School.

Booth served as Sub-Dean of the Chapel Royal, Deputy Clerk of the Closet, Subalmoner of the Royal Almonry and former domestic chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II, appointed in 1991, was the sole full-time member of the Ecclesiastical Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. Additional appointments included Priest Vicar of Westminster Abbey (1987-1993), and Priest in Ordinary to Queen Elizabeth (1976-1993).

William Booth (footballer)

William Booth (October 1880 – unknown) was an English footballer. His regular position was as a forward. Born in Stockport, he played for Manchester United and Edge Lane.

Transferring from Edge Lane in December 1900, Booth made two appearances as a forward for Manchester United, on 26 and 29 December 1900, aged 20. The 26 December match against Blackpool resulted in a 4-0 win for United, while the 29 December match against Glossop North End resulted in a 3-0 win for United.

Booth transferred from Manchester United in June 1901.

William Booth (bishop)

William Booth or Bothe (died 12 September 1464) was Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield from 1447 before becoming Archbishop of York in 1452 until his death in 1464.

Life

Prior to his election as bishop of the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, Booth had served as Rector of Prescot, Lancashire from 1441. He was provided to the see of Coventry and Lichfield on 26 April 1447 and consecrated on 9 July 1447.

Booth was translated to the diocese of York on 21 July 1452. In the late summer of 1463, allied with the Neville brothers Richard Earl of Warwick and John Marquess of Montagu, Archbishop Booth led an army in the north of England which repelled an attempted invasion by the Scots and former king Henry VI with Margaret of Anjou.

Booth died the following year, on 12 September 1464, at Bishopthorpe Palace and is buried in a family vault at Southwell Minster.

Bill Booth (ice hockey)

William Walton "Bill" Booth ((1919-08-20)August 20, 1919 – September 25, 1986(1986-09-25)) was a Canadian ice hockey player who mainly played in Great Britain during the 1940s and 1950s, although he is best remembered as a Coach with the Durham Wasps. He is a member of the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.

Career

Although he learned to skate by he age of eight, Bill Booth did not start playing ice hockey until he was 14 years old. However, he was still good enough to gain a place with Lachute in the Montreal Senior Provincial League (MSPL) when he was 20 years old before icing with Valleyfield Braves.

In 1943 whilst serving with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps during World War II, Booth played in two exhibition games against the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens. In 1944, Booth went to Europe with the Canadian Army. After the war, he stayed in Europe playing services hockey.

Booth joined the Brighton Tigers in 1946 following his demobilization from the army. Booth played with the Tigers for three seasons — winning the Autumn Cup and the league championship in 1946–47 as well as the league championship in 1947–48. In 158 games played for the Tigers, Booth's statistics are: 26 goals, 41 assists, 67 points and 250 penalty minutes.

William Booth (forger)

William Booth (died 12 August 1812) was an English farmer and forger. He is the subject of the song "Twice Tried, Twice Hung, Twice Buried" by John Raven.

Booth was born at Hall End Farm near Beaudesert, Warwickshire in 1776, 1778 or 1779. He was one of eight children of a farmer and church warden, John Booth, and his wife Mary. He lived at Great Barr, then in Staffordshire and now in the city of Birmingham.

On 28 February 1799, Booth signed a 25-year lease for what became known (by 1821 if not earlier) as 'Booth's Farm', including a farmhouse and 200 acres of land, part of the Perry Hallestate.

He was accused of murdering his brother John while revisiting Hall End on 19 February 1808, but was acquitted for lack of evidence.

He converted the top floor of the farmhouse into a workshop where he produced forgeries of coins and banknotes. He was caught, tried at Stafford Assizes and sentenced to hang. His accomplices were sentenced to transportation to Australia.

Booth's execution on 12 August 1812 was bungled, and he fell through the scaffold's trap door to the floor. Within two hours, he was hanged again and died. He was one of the last people (if not the last) to be sentenced to death in England for forgery.
