William Banks (footballer)

William Banks (born January 1893 in Shankhouse, Northumberland, England) was an English footballer who played as a defender for Liverpool F.C. in The Football League. Banks started his career at Hartford Burdon in the Bluthe and District League before he was signed by professional team Ashington. He then moved to Tranmere Rovers F.C. and then on to Liverpool. He made his debut towards the end of the 1913–14 season featuring in nine of the last eleven games of the season. He made a further seventeen appearances before the advent of the First World War, which interrupted his career. Following the end of the war he signed for Tranmere again. He later moved to Fulham F.C. where he played 43 matches between 1919 and 1921, scoring 12 goals.

Billy Banks (rugby)

William Martin "Billy" Banks (11 January 1925 – August 1991) birth registered in Bridgend, was a Welsh rugby union and professional Rugby League World Cup winning footballer of the 1940s and '50s, playing club level rugby union (RU) for Maesteg RFC, as a Scrum-half, i.e. number 9, and playing representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain, Wales, Other Nationalities, British Empire, and Combined Nationalities, and at club level for Leeds, Wakefield Trinity (Heritage #558), Huddersfield, Whitehaven, and Salford, as a stand-off/five-eighth, or scrum-half/halfback, i.e. number 6, or 7.

Career

Club career

Banks made his début for Leeds against Keighley at Headingley Stadium on Saturday 23 February 1946. He moved to Wakefield Trinity a year later for £500, and in August 1948, he was transferred to Huddersfield for £1,850. Banks played 281 games for Huddersfield between 1948 and 1956. He went on to play for Whitehaven and Salford before retiring in 1960.

William Banks (MP)

William Banks (19 April 1719 – September 1761) was an English MP and the father of Sir Joseph Banks, the naturalist.

He was the younger son of Joseph Banks (MP) of Revesby Abbey, Lincolnshire. After being educated at Westminster School he entered the Middle Temple in 1736 to study law.

In 1741 he was elected MP for Grampound, sitting until 1747. He was unable to seek re-election after the loss of the use of his legs due to illness.

He married Sarah, the daughter of William Bate of Derbyshire, with whom he had a son, Sir Joseph Banks the famous naturalist, and a daughter. He succeeded his wife's grandfather in 1733, temporarily adopting the name of Hodgkinson, but reverted to Banks on succeeding his father in 1741 (his elder brother Joseph having died the year before).

William Banks (showman)

William Banks (fl. 1588–1637) was a showman, who lived in England. His performing horse "Marocco" was central to his reputation as a performer.

In literature

Banks is identified in Tarlton's Jests (1600) as a performer who served the Earl of Essex and exhibited his horse. His feats, which are briefly described in an epigram in Bastard's Chrestoleros (1598), included counting money, mentioned by William Shakespeare (Love's Labour's Lost, i. 2, 1. 53), by Bishop Hall (Toothless Satyrs, 1597) and by Sir Kenelm Digby (Nature of Bodies, 1644, p. 321); singling out persons named by his master (Tarlton's Jests; Brathwaite's Strappado for the Divell, 1615); and dancing, with very frequent allusions made by the Elizabethan dramatists in relation to Banks' dancing ability.

At the end of 1595 a pamphlet appeared, of which only two copies now exist. Entitled Maroccus Extaticus, or Bankes Bay Horse in a Trance, the pamphlet contains a discourse between Banks and his horse. A woodcut represents Banks in the act of opening his show, and the horse standing on his hind legs, with a stick in his mouth and dice on the ground. From the title-page it appears that Banks was at the time exhibiting his horse at the Belsavage Inn without Ludgate, where such entertainments were frequent and where Banks charged twopence for admission to his performance (Brathwaite's Strappado). The dialogue of the pamphlet deals with the hypocrisy of the puritans and other alleged abuses. It promises a second part, which never appeared.

William Banks (died 1676)

William Banks (1636 – 6 July 1676) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons twice between 1660 and 1676.

Banks was the son of William Banks of Winstanley Hall, the only son by his second wife Sarah Jones, daughter of Walter Jones of Chastleton, Oxfordshire.

In 1660, he was elected Member of Parliament for Newton. He was Deputy Lieutenant for Lancashire from around August 1660 to 1662, and from 1663 to his death. He was commissioner for assessment from August 1660 to 1674 and commissioner for corporations from 1662 to 1663. From 1665 to 1674 he was joint farmer of excise and he succeeded to the Winstanley estate on the death of his father in 1666. He was a J.P. from 1665 to 1666 and from 1670 until his death. He was a freeman of Liverpool by 1670 and a Vice-Admiral of Lancashire and Cheshire from 1673 to his death. In May 1675 he was elected MP for Liverpool.

Banks died aged about 40 during the long parliamentary recess and was buried at Chastleton.

William Banks (alderman)

William Joseph Panebianco Banks (born July 28, 1949) was alderman of the 36th ward in Chicago from 1983 to 2009.

Early career

Banks is Italian-American; to avoid anti-Italian bigotry, Banks' father, currency exchange owner Vincenzo Giuseppe Panebianco, anglicized his name to James Joseph and added "Banks" to their surname. All his sons continued to use "P" or "Panebianco" in front of "Banks."

Banks earned a B.A. degree in 1971 and a law degree in 1975 from DePaul University.

Before his election as alderman, Banks served as Chief Research Aide and Legal Counselor to Congressman Morgan F. Murphy. Later, Banks served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago.

Political career

Banks is the Democratic committeeman for the 36th Ward, a party position within the Cook County Democratic Party. Banks took over as committeeman when long-time ward committeeman Louis Garippo died in 1981.

Banks is chairman of two well-funded political action committees, the "Friends of William J P Banks" and the "Citizens to Elect Committeeman William J P Banks", and controls a third, the "36th Ward Regular Democratic Organization".
