Wig!

Wig! is an album by American singer-songwriter Peter Case, released in 2010.

History

Case had suffered heart problems and had major heart surgery in 2009. After his recovery, the album was made quickly and spontaneously. It is described as "the sweet spot where garage rock, punk, and the visceral wail of blues converge", diverging from Case's previous alternative folk and country blues.

Reception

Writing for Allmusic, music critic Paul Carino wrote of the album "the off-the-cuff vibe creates a thrilling authenticity, hitting the sweet spot where garage rock, punk, and the visceral wail of blues converge."

Wig

A wig is a head covering made from human hair, animal hair, or synthetic fiber that is worn for fashion or other reasons, including cultural tradition and religious observance. The word wig is short for periwig and first appeared in the English language around 1675.

Some people wear wigs to disguise baldness; a wig may be used as a less intrusive and less expensive alternative to medical therapies for restoring hair. Wigs may also be used as an article of apparel, or to fulfill a religious obligation. Actors often wear costume wigs in order to portray characters.

History

Ancient use

The ancient Egyptians wore wigs to shield their shaved, hairless heads from the sun. They also wore the wigs on top of their hair using beeswax and resin to keep the wigs in place. Other ancient cultures, including the Assyrians,Phoenicians, Jews in ancient Israel,Greeks and Romans, also used wigs as an everyday fashion.

In Korea, gache were popular among women until it was banned in the late 18th century, while wigs were rarely used in China and Japan except in the traditional theatre.

Wig (song)

"Wig" is a single by The B-52's released as the only UK single from the album. It wasn't released in the US. Wig was the third and last single in total from their 1986 album Bouncing off the Satellites. The single peaked at #79 in the UK.

The single was released to coincide with the delayed release of Bouncing Off The Satellites in the UK in 1987, a year after it had been released in the US. While the band didn't tour the album due to guitarist Ricky Wilson's then recent death, they came to the UK to make promotional appearances miming to "Wig" on TV and being interviewed in magazines.

Many years later, in 2010, they started playing "Wig" live, and a live version was included on their With The Wild Crowd! live album.
