White people

White people is a racial classification specifier, depending on context used for people of Europid ancestry. The contemporary usage of "white people" or a "white race" as a large group of (mainly European) populations contrasting with "black", American Indian, "colored" or non-white originates in the 17th century. It is today particularly used as a racial classifier in multiracial societies, such as the United States (White American), the United Kingdom (White British), Brazil (White Brazilian), and South Africa (White South African). Various social constructions of whiteness have been significant to national identity, public policy, religion, population statistics, racial segregation, affirmative action, white privilege, eugenics, racial marginalization and racial quotas.

The term "white race" or "white people" entered the major European languages in the later 17th century, in the context of racialized slavery and unequal status in European colonies. Description of populations as "white" in reference to their skin color predates this notion and is found in Greco-Roman ethnography and other ancient sources. Scholarship on race generally distinguishes the modern concept from pre-modern descriptions of collective difference.

White People is a 2015 American documentary film directed, produced and starring Jose Antonio Vargas which explores white privilege in the United States. The cast includes Dakota Wright, Lucas Nydam, Samantha Slavinsky, Katy, and John Chimento. The film debuted on MTV.

Reception

Time wrote that "Vargas is excellent at creating a non-threatening atmosphere that encourages these young people, mostly teenagers, to openly express their thoughts – even when not politically correct – about race ... This documentary burns brightly with heat and illumination."Variety said that the special was "generally interesting, but seldom digs farther than skin-deep" and "would have been improved by either a narrower approach – zeroing in on one or two of the focus groups – or by expanding it to two hours."The Atlantic wrote that the "best parts of the program try to debunk common, defiant responses white people have when told that they're privileged."

Other media outlets were critical of the film for promoting white guilt. While The Hollywood Reporter said in a review of the film, "There's so much prospect for challenge and stimulation here, yet Vargas never digs deep, jumping away from these varying tales right when they’re getting interesting (and just in time for commercial break). White People wants to be an agent of change, but it would first need to have more than the ephemeral quality of a Twitter hashtag.

At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, White People received an average score of 66% based on 28 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

John Murphy of MusicOMH called it "the most innovative, original and enjoyable hip-hop album since Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below."
