What's on TV is a weekly television listings magazine published by Time Inc. UK.

Overview

What's on TV is a weekly UK television magazine. It publishes features, TV listings, news and gossip from soap operas, as well as puzzles and competitions. Its primary focus is on soaps and reality TV, but documentaries and dramas are also covered.

It was launched in March 1991, after the monopoly on broadcast programming listings magazines ended and the market was opened up. Before this, two TV magazines were available: Radio Times for BBC listings and TV Times for ITV and, from 1982, Channel 4 listings. Two other magazines appeared on the market at the same time – TV Quick and the short-lived TV Plus.

Early covers of What's on TV usually featured TV stars and programmes, but now they almost exclusively promote soap stories.

In January 2007, Time UK (then still IPC) launched a soaps and TV website branded as What's On TV, which focuses on plot spoilers and catch-ups for EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Doctors, Neighbours and Home and Away, as well as reality TV and drama. What's On

What's On (Traditional Chinese: 熒幕八爪娛) is a weekly half-hour infotainment TV series that airs on Fairchild TV.

Format

Originally started in 1996, the show is currently the longest-running program in Fairchild Television history. What's On is a 30-minute informative program that introduces viewers to events happening in and around Vancouver and Toronto. It also runs short interviews with local celebrities, politicians and social figures for events they are contributing to, as well as interviews with international celebrities as they arrive in the city to promote or to perform.

Originally, there were two versions of the show. The Vancouver version and Toronto version ran in the same time slot in their respective cities on Thursday nights at 10:00 p.m. while the version of the opposite city ran on Saturdays at 6:00 p.m. However, because of the CRTC's ruling requiring Fairchild TV to air the same programming throughout the country, the two shows combined into one in July 2001 with each city getting 15 minutes of airtime. This also meant the start of the "interactive" format of the show where the hosts from the two cities shared a brief interaction as the scenes change from one city to another.

What's On (1950s TV series)

What's On was an Australian television series, which aired in Melbourne on station HSV-7. The short-lived weekly series aired on Wednesdays from 29 July 1959 to 14 October 1959, and was hosted by Jean Battersby. Each episode was about 13 minutes long. According to TV listings in The Age newspaper, the series presented a round-up of stage and film entertainment in the Melbourne area.

The archival status of the series is unknown.

"...on Television" or "...on TV", was a long-running late night television programme on ITV. The programme, which was made first by LWT and then Granada Productions, featured a number of clips from unusual or, (often unintentionally), amusing television programmes and commercials from around the world.

The show was first presented by TV critic and journalist Clive James between 1982 and 1988, then celebrity chef Keith Floyd in 1989, and finally Chris Tarrant from 1990 to 2006.

The show remained "Tarrant on TV" for 16 years.

Early years

The show first began in 1982, hosted by the Australian television critic and satirist Clive James. The series showed funny and bizarre clips from TV shows and adverts from around the world, most notably from the far eastern countries of Japan and Korea. The series popularised the Japanese show Endurance which followed numerous contestants as they underwent painful tasks around the world.

After James joined the BBC in 1988, celebrity chef Keith Floyd was brought in for a six-episode series in 1989 before Chris Tarrant took over in 1990.

On TV (song)

"On TV" is a single from the British synthpop group The Buggles, released in July 1982 on Carrere Records. Though it didn't chart in their home country of the UK, the single did go gold in Canada.

Like "I Am a Camera" and "Lenny", this Buggles single "On TV" b/w "Fade Away" was re-released on iTunes as an EP by Trevor Horn's own ZTT label in 2012, with two bonus demos: one of "On TV" itself, and one called "Videotheque". After its 1981 demo had been completed, "Videotheque" would later be reworked for Dollar's 1982 release, The Dollar Album. As well, the lyrics of "Videotheque" would also influence the song "Hand Held in Black and White" from the same album. Both Dollar songs were released as singles and charted in the UK top 20 chart. All four of these tracks (A-side/B-side and two demos) are also available on the 2010 re-release of Adventures in Modern Recording.
