Westfield State University

Westfield State University (also known as "'Westfield State'" and formerly known as Westfield State College) is a comprehensive, coeducational, four-year public university in Westfield, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1838 by noted educator and social reformer Horace Mann as the first public co-educational college in America without barrier to race, gender, or economic class.

Location

Westfield State is located 45 miles (72 km) from Hartford, and 90 miles (140 km) from Boston, both of which have international airports. The nearest bus and train station is in Springfield. Approximately 50% of students have a car on campus. There are 13 other colleges and universities in proximity to the campus.

Westfield State University’s main 256-acre (1.04 km²) campus is located in a suburban neighborhood along Western Avenue and accessible via the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority bus system, which is free to on-campus residents.

The Main Campus is known for its centralized large campus green, tall pines, flowering trees, and seasonal landscaping. Nine residential halls, five academic buildings, one dining hall, an interfaith center, a power plant, the campus center and library encircle the green, where intramural sports and recreational activities are common.

State Universities and Colleges (Philippines)

State Universities and Colleges (SUC) in the Philippines refers to any public institution of higher learning that was created by an Act passed by the Philippine Congress. These institutions are fully subsidized by the National Government, and may be considered as a corporate body.

Among the State Colleges and Universities in the country, the University of the Philippines has always been recognized as the nation's premier university and has likewise been strengthened by law (Republic Act 9500) as the "National University" of the Philippines.

SUCs lamented the Philippine government's inadequate financial aid. For the 2003-2004, SUCs only had PHP 16.8 billion, and about 40 percent of it went to the University of the Philippines and the Mindanao State University. However, in 2008, the Philippine Congress allotted PHP 20.8 billion in subsidy for the operations of state universities and colleges.

Collectively, SUCs have a student population of approximately 865,000, which means that every student is subsidized by an average of PHP 24,000 per school year. Each Filipino family contributes PHP 1,185 a year to run these schools through their tax payments. Of the total amount, PHP 15.4 billion for the salaries of faculty members and employees.

State College, Pennsylvania

State College is a home rule municipality in Centre County in the state of Pennsylvania. It is currently the largest designated borough in Pennsylvania. It is the principal borough of the six municipalities comprising the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area, the largest settlement in Centre County and one of the principal cities of the greater State College-DuBois, PA Combined Statistical Area with a combined population of 236,577 as of the 2010 U.S. census. As of the 2010 census, the borough population was 42,034, with approximately 105,000 living in the borough plus the surrounding townships often referred to locally as the "Centre Region." Many of these Centre Region communities also carry a "State College, PA" address although are not specifically part of the borough of State College.

State College is a college town, dominated economically and demographically by the presence of the University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). Though "Happy Valley" is another often-used term to refer to the State College area, the term also includes the borough and the townships of College, Harris, Patton, and Ferguson.
