Westbrook (CTrain)

Westbrook is the third station on the new West LRT line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station, along with the rest of the line, opened on December 10, 2012. However, on December 8, 2012, it was opened as a preview for the public to use.

The station is located underground beside 33 Street SW between Bow Trail and 17 Avenue SW, 4 km from the 7 Avenue & 9 Street SW Interlocking. The station occupies the site of the former Ernest Manning High School, which closed in June 2011, and a former Petro-Canada service station that closed in 2009. The school and station were demolished to make room for this station and a new school (using the same name) was built 3.5 kilometres away near the 69 Street SW station. The new school opened in September 2011. The Westbrook station also offers a new BRT service to Mount Royal University and Heritage station.

The station platform is located underground, with two entrances above ground, and is the first operational underground CTrain station in Calgary. A station was planned for under Calgary's Olympic Plaza. However, only the approach tunnel exists below Calgary's Municipal Building, as part of a subway system that was partially built and mothballed in the mid-1980s. The station was built with provisions for a spur line to Mount Royal University in the future.

Westbrook, Connecticut

Westbrook is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 6,938 at the 2010 census. The town center is also classified by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census-designated place (CDP).

Geography

Westbrook lies in the shoreline area of the state. The town is bordered by the towns of Essex, Clinton, Deep River, and Old Saybrook, where the Connecticut River empties into Long Island Sound. The Salt Meadow Unit of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge is located in town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.4 square miles (55 km²), of which, 15.7 square miles (41 km²) is land and 5.7 square miles (15 km²) (26.47%) is water. The CDP has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²) of which 22.33% is water.

Westbrook encompasses three islands in Long Island Sound, all of which are uninhabited. Salt Island is the easternmost and smallest, at approximately 0.9 acres. Menunketesuck Island, which is the largest of Westbrook's islands at approximately 4.6 acres, extends into the Sound from the outlet of the Menunketesuck and Patchogue Rivers and is part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. Further west is Duck Island, measuring approximately 3.6 acres.

Westbrook (Shore Line East station)

Westbrook is a passenger rail station along the Shore Line East commuter rail line, which runs on the Northeast Corridor between New Haven and New London. Westbrook station consists of a small parking lot and one side platform on the southbound side of the tracks. A new station with a larger lot and two platforms opened on March 25, 2014. The larger lot now allows the station, which is less than half a mile from I-95 and US-1, to serve as a park-and-ride station.

Westbrook is a commuter-only station; Amtrak's Acela Express and Northeast Regional services run through the station without stopping. Westbrook is served by about 7-10 midday and peak-direction rush hour Shore Line East trains in each direction on weekdays and 5 in each direction on weekends.

History

New Haven Railroad

The New Haven & New London Railroad was chartered in 1848, began construction in 1850, and opened for service in July 1852. A station was located on the north side of the tracks off Essex Road (the modern location) just north of downtown Westbrook. The line was owned by the New York, Providence and Boston Railroad (the "Stonington Road") from 1858 to 1862, and by the Shore Line Railway from 1864 until it was acquired by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad (the "New Haven") in 1870. The original 1852-built Westbrook combination depot still stands just north of the tracks at the original site, although it has been turned and moved slightly back from the tracks. A NYP&B emblem from the 1858-1862 ownership was formerly displayed on one end of the building.
