West Virginia

West Virginia ⁱ/ˌwɛst vərˈdʒɪnjə/ is a state located in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the north (and, slightly, east), and Maryland to the northeast. West Virginia is the 41st largest by area and the 38th most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and largest city is Charleston.

West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, in which delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia during the American Civil War, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).

West Virginia Route 101

West Virginia Route 101 is an unsigned 1-mile (1.6 km) long north–south state highway in the City of Huntington in Cabell County, West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 60 (31st Street). The northern terminus is at US 60 (Third Avenue).

From 31st Street, WV 101 follows Eighth Avenue west to 29th Street, where WV 101 turns north to follow 29th Street to Third Avenue.

History

WV 101 was part of US 60 until US 60 was moved two blocks to the east in 1990.

West Virginia Route 83

West Virginia Route 83 is an east–west state highway located within McDowell County, West Virginia. The western terminus is at the Virginia state line six miles (10 km) west of Jolo, where WV 83 continues west as Virginia State Route 83. The eastern terminus is at West Virginia Route 16 in War.

WV 83 is slated to be replaced by the Coalfields Expressway.

West Virginia Route 6

West Virginia Route 6 is an unsigned state highway in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Its entire length is the Montgomery Bridge, also known as the Earl M. Vickers Bridge, over the Kanawha River from West Virginia Route 61 in Montgomery north to U.S. Route 60 west of Smithers. The bridge opened in 1956.

Virginia State Route 6

State Route 6 (SR 6) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known for most of its length as River Road, the state highway runs 102.26 miles (164.57 km) from U.S. Route 250 (US 250) in Afton east to SR 161 in Richmond. SR 6 is one of the main highways of mountainous Nelson County, where the highway runs north–south from its beginning to US 29. From Scottsville to Richmond, the state highway parallels the James River. SR 6 is a major suburban highway through southwestern Henrico County and the main street of Richmond's West End.

SR 6 is a Virginia Byway from SR 151 at Avon to SR 650 near Manakin.

Route description

SR 6 begins at US 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) on the slope of Afton Mountain, the local name for this section of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Rockfish Gap. The state highway heads south as Afton Mountain Road, which descends the mountain curvaceously and passes through the village of Afton, where the highway crosses over a CSX rail line. At the bottom of the descent, SR 6 meets SR 151 (Critzers Shop Road) in the village of Avon. The two highways head south as Rockfish Valley Highway through the namesake valley. Just south of Greenfield, SR 6 leaves SR 151 and heads east as River Road, which follows the Rockfish River through a mountainous area south to US 29 (Thomas Nelson Highway). SR 6 heads east along the four-lane divided highway between several mountains before splitting to the southeast as Irish Road. The state highway crosses over Norfolk Southern Railway's Washington District in Faber and enters Albemarle County at a gap between Shiloh Mountain and Butler Mountain.

South Carolina Highway 6

South Carolina Highway 6 is a 115-mile (185 km) state highway that extends from Moncks Corner in Berkeley County to Ballentine in Richland County, near Irmo. It uniquely links all three of the major hydropower projects in South Carolina: Lake Murray, Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie.

Route description

The highway runs generally southeast from the central part of South Carolina to near the Atlantic Ocean and is listed as a hurricane evacuation route.

Beginning at a junction with U.S. Highway 52 in Moncks Corner, the route runs northwest along the shoreline of Lake Moultrie as West Main Street. It then turns right onto Ranger Drive. It turns left onto "Old Number Six Highway" where is later starts a concurrency with SC 45 as Eutaw Road. The concurrency runs and far from Lake Marion, and passes through Eutawville. There SC 45 departs to the west and SC 6 continues along the lake through Vance to Santee, where it intersects Interstate 95. It then adjoins the Santee State Park on its right. After a concurrency with SC 267 begins, it becomes Main Street through Elloree, South Carolina. The concurrency ends when SC 267 turns off to the right onto Lonestar Road. SC 6 then traverses St. Matthews as Bridge Street before having a brief concurrency with U.S. Highway 176. Route 26 turns left onto Caw Caw Highway and has an interchange with Interstate 26. The route turns right and head northwest in a concurrency with U.S. Route 21 and then separates from U.S. 21 onto Center Hill Road. It turns right on St. Matthews Road in a northwesterly direction, passing through Swansea as 2nd Street intersecting U.S. Route 321 in town and joining a concurrency with SC 302 as Edmund Hwy. The concurrency ends when SC 6 turns to the left onto S. Lake Drive where it heads northwest to Red Bank. In Red Bank, it intersects with Interstate 20.
