West Ocean City, Maryland

West Ocean City is a census-designated place (CDP) in Worcester County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,311 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

West Ocean City is located at 38°20′6″N 75°6′45″W / 38.33500°N 75.11250°W / 38.33500; -75.11250 (38.335010, -75.112474).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.6 square miles (17 km²), of which, 4.0 square miles (10 km²) of it is land and 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²) of it (39.22%) is water.

Climate

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, West Ocean City has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,311 people, 1,425 households, and 967 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 822.4 people per square mile (317.2/km²). There were 2,075 housing units at an average density of 515.4/sq mi (198.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.04% White, 1.60% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.42% of the population.

Ocean City (OC or OCMD), officially the Town of Ocean City, is an Atlantic resort town in Worcester County, Maryland. Ocean City is widely known in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and is a frequent destination for vacationers in that area. The population was 7,102 at the 2010 U.S. Census, although during summer weekends the city hosts between 320,000 and 345,000 vacationers, and up to 8 million visitors annually. During the summer, Ocean City becomes the second most populated town in Maryland. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The land upon which the city was built, as well as much of the surrounding area, was obtained by Englishman Thomas Fenwick from the Native Americans. In 1869, businessman Isaac Coffin built the first beach-front cottage to receive paying guests. During those days, people arrived by stage coach and ferry. They came to fish off the shore, to enjoy the natural beauty of the Atlantic Ocean pounding against the long strip of sandy beach, to collect seashells, or just to sit back and watch the rolling surf.

Ocean City is a city in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States. It is the county's largest city by area and is the principal city of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Cape May County. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 11,701, reflecting a decline of 3,677 (-23.9%) from the 15,378 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 134 (-0.9%) from the 15,512 counted in the 1990 Census. In summer months, with an influx of tourists and second homeowners, there are estimated to be 115,000 to 130,000 within the city's borders.

Ocean City originated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 3, 1884, from portions of Upper Township, based on results from a referendum on April 30, 1884, and was reincorporated as a borough on March 31, 1890. Ocean City was incorporated as a city, its current government form, on March 25, 1897. The city is named for its location on the Atlantic Ocean.
