West Down

West Down is a civil parish and village located in North Devon, England, between Braunton and Ilfracombe. In 2001 its population was 620.

West Down's church is dedicated to Saint Callixtus and its first recorded priest was in 1272. The present church dates from the 14th century, partly rebuilt in 1712. Its Norman font was buried in the churchyard in the Civil War and only rediscovered in the 19th century.

West Down (UK Parliament constituency)

West Down was a UK Parliament constituency in Ireland which returned one Member of Parliament from 1885 to 1922, using the first past the post electoral system.

Boundaries and Boundary Changes

This county constituency was first created in 1885 from the western part of Down. It was defined as including 'The Baronies of - Lower Iveagh, Lower Half, and Lower Iveagh, Upper Half, and so much of the Barony of Iveagh Upper, Upper Half, as comprises the Parishes or parts of Parishes of - Aghaderg, Annaclone and Seapatrick.'. There was a boundary change altering this division in 1918, when the new Mid Down constituency was created, and West Down was redefined as including 'The rural district of Moira; the part of the rural district of Banbridge which is not included in the East Down Division; and the urban districts of Banbridge and Dromore.'. Prior to the United Kingdom general election, 1885 and after the dissolution of Parliament in 1922 the area was part of the Down constituency.

West Down was a constituency of the Parliament of Northern Ireland.

Boundaries

West Down was a county constituency comprising part of western County Down. It was created when the House of Commons (Method of Voting and Redistribution of Seats) Act (Northern Ireland) 1929 introduced first-past-the-post elections throughout Northern Ireland. West Down was created by the division of Down into eight new constituencies. It survived unchanged, returning one Member of Parliament, until the Parliament of Northern Ireland was temporarily suspended in 1972, and then formally abolished in 1973.

The seat included the town of Banbridge, and also parts of the rural districts of Banbridge and Newry No.1.

Politics

The seat had a substantial unionist majority and was always won by Ulster Unionist Party candidates. It was contested on three occasions by independent unionists, each of whom won over 40% of the votes cast, and once by a communist candidate.
