Welcome (1986 film)

Welcome (Russian: Добро пожаловать) is a 1986 Soviet paint-on-glass-animated 10-minute film adapted from the 1948 children's book by Dr. Seuss Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose. Coproduction of Sverdlovsk television studio and Gosteleradio.

Released in 1986, the film went on to win the Grand Prix at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1988 and in Los Angeles. Although the visual style is quite different, the story is mostly the same with the exception of some subtle changes — for example, the moose isn't shown rejoining his herd at the end and the squatter animals aren't stuffed and mounted. Also, none of the animals are ever named and there is no narrator. The film was directed by Alexei Karayev. The art director was Aleksandr Petrov, who would later win an Oscar for his 1999 film The Old Man and the Sea. The screenplay was written by Yury Iosifovich Koval, a renowned author.

Ripley, Mississippi

Ripley is a city in Tippah County, Mississippi. The population was 5,478 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Tippah County.

Colonel William Clark Falkner, great-grandfather of authors William Faulkner and John Faulkner, was a prominent resident of Ripley in the mid to late-19th century. W.C. Falkner's exploits in and around Ripley served as the model for Faulkner's character of Colonel John Sartoris.

Geography

Ripley is located at 34°43′57″N 88°56′49″W / 34.73250°N 88.94694°W / 34.73250; -88.94694 (34.732363, -88.947055).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.5 square miles (30 km²), of which 11.5 square miles (30 km²) is land and 0.04-square-mile (0.10 km²) (0.35%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,478 people, 2,174 households, and 1,441 families residing in the city. The population density was 476.8 people per square mile (184.1/km²). There were 2,334 housing units at an average density of 203.1 per square mile (78.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.65% White, 19.90% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.34% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.91% of the population.

Ellen Ripley

Ellen Louise Ripley is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Alien film series played by American actress Sigourney Weaver. The character earned Weaver world recognition, and the role remains her most famous to date.

Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) were heralded for challenging gender roles, particularly in the science fiction, action and horror genres. Weaver's performances are also highly praised: for Aliens, she earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, which is now seen as a landmark since the Academy, to that point, had given little recognition to the genres of science-fiction and horror. For her role in the franchise, Weaver has also been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, a BAFTA Award for Best Leading Newcomer, and four Saturn Awards for Best Actress, winning one for Aliens.
