Weingarten Realty

Weingarten Realty Investors (NYSE: WRI) is a real estate investment trust (REIT), headquartered in Houston, Texas. Weingarten Realty is a shopping center owner, manager and developer. The majority of the shopping centers are anchored by a supermarket or a national value-oriented retailer and are located in neighborhood and community centers. As of 2012, it was Houston's largest commercial real estate property owner. At September 30, 2014, Weingarten Realty owned or operated 251 retail properties in 21 states in the U.S., representing 47.4 million square feet of commercial real estate.

History

In the 1880s Harris Weingarten, a man who left Poland, started a dry goods store in Houston. The current company was established in 1948 as the Weingarten Markets Realty; at the time it operated Weingarten's supermarkets. Joe, the eldest son of Harris Weingarten, established the current company. In 1980 the company left the supermarket market.

The Houston Business Journal, in its July 2011 ranking of Houston’s Top 100 Public Companies, placed Weingarten at No. 93.

Weingarten (Baden)

 Weingarten  (Baden) is a municipality in the district of Karlsruhe in southwestern Germany, situated at the transition from the Kraichgau to the Rhine valley. Its name means vine garden in German. Weingarten is located on Bertha Benz Memorial Route.

While remains of a settlement from Roman or earlier times have been found nearby, the village itself developed from a farm belonging to the Wissembourg monastery in Northern Alsace; 985 is considered to be the village's founding year. Until 1803, Weingarten belonged to the Electorate of the Palatinate; in the course of the Napoleonic wars it became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden.

The population is about two thirds protestant, one third catholic. The village is connected by Bundesstraße (federal road) B 3 and the railroad Frankfurt am Main-Basel. Close by is Bundesautobahn (motorway) A 5 Karlsruhe-Frankfurt am Main.

The village has its own elementary and secondary school; further schools are in the neighbouring cities of Karlsruhe, Bruchsal and Stutensee.

Weingarten, Württemberg

 Weingarten  (German for "vineyard") is a town with a population of 24,000 (as of 2005) in Württemberg, in the District of Ravensburg, in the valley of the Schussen River. Together with the southern neighbour cities of Ravensburg and Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance (Bodensee), it forms one of 14 medium-sized infrastructural centres in Baden-Württemberg. The town is seat of the University of Applied Sciences of Ravensburg-Weingarten (Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten) and of the Teachers' College of Weingarten (Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten).

History

The town was formerly known as Altdorf and was renamed to Weingarten in 1865. Before that, Weingarten was the name of Weingarten Abbey only, which lay on the Martinsberg (St. Martin's hill) above the town. The name "Altdorf" is derived from the Frankish alach for "church". So "Altdorf" does not mean "old village" but "village/thorp with the parish church".

Near the old town, an Alemannic burial place was excavated in 1954–1957, dating from the 5th century. In the 8th century the region became part of the Frankish empire. Around the 9th century the Elder Welfs became counts of the Schussengau and established their seat in Altdorf.
