Wei Zheng

Wei Zheng (580–643), courtesy name Xuancheng, posthumously known as Duke Wenzhen of Zheng, was a Chinese statesman and historian. He served as a chancellor of the Tang dynasty for about 13 years during the reign of Emperor Taizong. He was also the lead editor of the official history of the Sui dynasty, the Book of Sui, which was composed in 636.

Wei Zheng was born to a poor family in modern Hebei, and joined Li Mi's rebellion against the Sui dynasty in his youth. After Li Mi's submission to the Tang Empire, Wei Zheng became a Tang official and eventually served on the staff of Li Jiancheng, the Crown Prince and eldest son of Emperor Gaozu, the Tang dynasty's founding emperor. As such, he served against the interests of Li Jiancheng's younger brother, Li Shimin (the Prince of Qin), with whom Li Jiancheng was locked in an intense rivalry. In 626, Li Shimin ambushed and killed Li Jiancheng, and then effectively forced Emperor Gaozu to yield the throne to him. Rather than punishing Wei Zheng, however, he was impressed with Wei's faithfulness to Li Jiancheng, and he made Wei an important official, eventually a chancellor. Wei Zheng's promotion to this position gave him far broader freedom to criticise others, particularly the emperor, than other officers of the court. He emphasized propriety and opposed overextending the state. His advice and criticism were not always accepted, but in accordance with Confucian etiquette, the emperor would concede to his suggestions with some regularity.

Wei Zheng (pharmacist)

Wei Zheng (Traditional Chinese/Simplified Chinese: 鄭偉/郑伟), is an American pharmaceutical scientist. He is the current Head of the School of Health Sciences, Purdue University.

Biography

Zheng received BS in pharmacy from the Zhejiang University College of Pharmacy in Hangzhou, China; He received a MS in pharmacology from the same college. Zheng later went to study in USA, and obtained Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Arizona in Tucson.

From 1993 to 1999, Zheng worked as an assistant professor at the School of Public Health and College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York. During 2000-2002, he was an associate professor at the same institute.

Zheng currently served as a professor of Health Sciences and Toxicology, the Associate Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences, and the Head of the School of Health Sciences, Purdue University.

2003-2007, Zheng was a member of the NIH Environmental Health Sciences Review Committee. Since 2008, he has been a member of the NIH/NAL Study Section (mission till 2012). Zheng was also elected into the Society of Toxicology, the Society for Neuroscience, and the New York Academy of Sciences. He is the President of the Metals Specialty Section of SOT (2009–2010). Zheng is also the Board Member of Chinese Society of Toxicology. Zheng is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America published in 2009.
