Weaverville is a census designated place and the county seat of Trinity County, California in the United States. The population was 3,600 at the 2010 census, up from 3,554 at the 2000 census.

History

Founded in 1850, Weaverville is a historic California Gold Rush town. Nestled at the foot of the current Trinity Alps Wilderness Area, Weaverville was once home to approximately 2,000 Chinese gold miners, and had its own Chinatown.

Logging and tourism were the economic mainstays of Weaverville for many years. The regional economy has been in steady decline for many years, with only a small uplift brought about by the global real estate bubble. Trinity county's unemployment rate - as of April, 2009 - stood at 20.9% (NY Times).

Weaverville is the home of California's oldest continuously used Chinese temple. The Joss House is now managed by the park system and is open to visitors all year round

Weaverville is often threatened by forest fires.

Weaverville is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,120 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Weaverville is located in northern Buncombe County at 35°41′45″N 82°33′30″W / 35.69583°N 82.55833°W / 35.69583; -82.55833 (35.695809, -82.558444).Interstate 26, concurrent with U.S. Routes 23 and 19, runs along the western edge of the town, with access from exits 18, 19, and 21. I-26 leads south 9 miles (14 km) to downtown Asheville and 51 miles (82 km) north to Johnson City, Tennessee. U.S. Routes 25 and 70 head west from exit 19, leading 52 miles (84 km) to Newport, Tennessee.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.9 km²), of which 0.008 square miles (0.02 km²), or 0.24%, is water, including a man-made lake on the southern outskirts of town named Lake Louise.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,416 people, 1,008 households, and 690 families residing in the town. The population density was 954.2 people per square mile (368.7/km²). There were 1,081 housing units at an average density of 426.9 per square mile (165.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.69% White, 1.28% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.41% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.16% of the population.
