Wealdstone F.C.

Wealdstone Football Club is a football club based in Ruislip in the County of Middlesex. The club is affiliated to the Middlesex County Football Association. The club are currently members of the Vanarama National League South, play in royal blue shirts, white shorts and royal blue and white socks, and are nicknamed "The Stones" or "The Royals".

The club appeared in the first televised football match in 1946, when the BBC showed part of their league match against Barnet. They were also the first club to win the non-League 'double', claiming both the FA Trophy and the Gola League (National League) in 1984–85.

History

The club was formed at the start of the 1899–1900 season. Their first game was a friendly match on 7 October 1899 against Northwood, which they won 6–1. They joined Division Two of the Willesden & District League, and were promoted to Division One for the 1900–01 season after Division Two was scrapped. In 1903 they moved to the College Farm Ground in Locket Road In 1905–06 the club won Division One, but on 20 October 1906 a notice was posted in the local newspaper stating that the club was being disbanded due to a lack of interest from players and supporters.

Wealdstone is an area of the London Borough of Harrow, north west London. It is located north of Harrow, south of Harrow Weald, west of Belmont and east of Headstone.

History and name

The eponymous Weald Stone is a sarsen stone, formerly marking the boundary between the parishes of Harrow and Harrow Weald. It is located outside the Weald Stone Inn (formerly the Red Lion), off High Road, Harrow Weald.

Sport

The Harrow Leisure Centre is located in Wealdstone and facilities include swimming, badminton, snooker, martial arts and a gym run by Harper's Fitness. One of the country's oldest remaining skate parks, Harrow Skate Park, is next to the leisure centre. The park is a major centre of the British skateboarding scene and draws visitors from all over the country.

Wealdstone FC have a long association with the town. Their original ground, known as Lower Mead, was located behind the ABC Cinema (now the Safari Cinema) on Station Road, prior to its controversial sale to Tesco for retail development. After many years of homelessness Wealdstone FC is now based nearby in Ruislip, having finally abandoned plans to relocate within Harrow at Prince Edward Fields, Canons Park. Famous ex-players include Stuart Pearce Vinnie Jones.
