WBAM, also known as Bama Country 98.9, is a country music formatted radio station that serves the Montgomery Metropolitan Area, broadcasting on the FM band at a frequency of 98.9 MHz and licensed to Montgomery, Alabama. The station is locally owned and operated by Bluewater Broadcasting Company, LLC. The station's transmitter is located in the town of Grady, Alabama. The station's studios are located on Wall St. in Midtown Montgomery.
Because of the 60-year history and large coverage area, the WBAM call letters are well known throughout the deep south. They stand for AlaBAMa.
WBAM also participates in Montgomery rating survey by Arbitron (Market #150) and is monitored by Mediabase.
WBAM signed on in 1953 as AM 740. WBAM was a powerhouse at 50,000 watts, covering much of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. From its earliest days, WBAM put on concerts for the Montgomery area. One of its earliest Big BAM Shows featured Elvis Presley as he ascended to fame, on the same bill with Roy Acuff. Hank Williams was another frequent live on-air performer.
WMSP (740 AM, "Sports Radio 740") is a radio station licensed to serve Montgomery, Alabama, USA. The station is owned by Cumulus Media and the broadcast license is held by Cumulus Licensing LLC. Originally licensed in 1953 as WBAM, the station broadcast contemporary and country music before turning to sports talk under the WMSP callsign in 1995. The WMSP studios are located on the 3rd floor of The Colonial Financial Center in downtown Montgomery, and the transmitter tower is in Montgomery's northeast side.
WMSP broadcasts a sports-talk format. Notable local programming includes Sportsline with John Longshore and Barry McKnight on weekday mornings and The MAX Roundtable on weekday afternoons. On Sunday mornings, WMSP airs both the traditional service and the contemporary service of Frazer United Methodist Church.
Regional syndicated programming includes Paul Finebaum's afternoon drive-time show. The station is an affiliate of CBS Sports Radio. Network programming on WMSP includes assorted CBS Sports Radio shows on nights and overnights.
