Palomar (comics)

Palomar (subtitled The Heartbreak Soup Stories) is the title of a graphic novel written and drawn by Gilbert Hernandez and published in 2003 by Fantagraphics Books (ISBN 1-56097-539-3). It collects work previously published within the pages of Love and Rockets (volume one). Palomar is the fictional town in Latin America where all the stories presented are set. Palomar is included in Time magazine's Best Comics of 2003 list, and in 2005 was one of Time's 100 best graphic novels of all time.

Palomar (band)

Palomar is an indie rock band out of Brooklyn, New York. The band originally formed in 1998; however, Rachel Warren is the only original member still in the band. Palomar has completed national U.S. tours every year since 2003, including a tour shared with nationally renowned indie band Mates of State. Their music has heard praise from various magazines including Pitchfork Media and The Austin Chronicle. The blend of rock music and melodic female vocals create a simple and driving pop sound reminiscent of the more popular Rilo Kiley. After three albums, two on Brooklyn indie The Self-Starter Foundation, their latest All Things, Forests was released by Misra Records on March 20, 2007.

The name is taken from the Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California.

Paw (band)

Paw was an American alternative rock band from Lawrence, Kansas, that was formed in 1990. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist Mark Hennessy, guitarist Grant Fitch, bassist Charles Bryan, and drummer Peter Fitch. They released two studio albums – Dragline and Death to Traitors, the mini album Home Is a Strange Place and the B-side and outtake collection Keep the Last Bullet for Yourself before disbanding in 2000. Hennessy, Grant Fitch, and later bassist Jason Magierowski reformed in 2008 for several performances.

History

Paw was formed in 1990 in Lawrence alongside Kill Creek and Stick. Their work from this era can best be characterized as aggressive rock with melodic undertones, or 'Southern rock' as Hennessy explained in an MTV interview. They were frequently cited by industry insiders as potentially "the next Nirvana" and a bidding war erupted to sign them. The band signed a three-album deal with A&M Records during the height of the grunge wave, and released their first album, Dragline, in 1993. Their most well-known songs from this period included the singles "Lolita", "Jessie", "Couldn't Know", "The Bridge" and "Sleeping Bag", all of which received moderate rotation on the radio and on Headbanger's Ball, MTV's hard rock/heavy metal showcase. Paw toured the UK in 1993 supporting Tool with Headswim (months after Tool's UK support slot with Rage Against The Machine), introducing the band to an audience outside of America. The band recorded two sessions for BBC Radio 1's rock show in 1994 (during which they played the Reading Festival). Their songs "Jessie", "Pansy" and "The Bridge" were used in the 3DO, PC, Sega Saturn and PlayStation versions of the video game Road Rash.

Watermark

A watermark is an identifying image or pattern in paper that appears as various shades of lightness/darkness when viewed by transmitted light (or when viewed by reflected light, atop a dark background), caused by thickness or density variations in the paper. Watermarks have been used on postage stamps, currency, and other government documents to discourage counterfeiting. There are two main ways of producing watermarks in paper; the dandy roll process, and the more complex cylinder mould process.

Watermarks vary greatly in their visibility; while some are obvious on casual inspection, others require some study to pick out. Various aids have been developed, such as watermark fluid that wets the paper without damaging it. Watermarks are often used as security features of banknotes, passports, postage stamps, and other documents to prevent counterfeiting (see security paper).

A watermark is very useful in the examination of paper because it can be used for dating, identifying sizes, mill trademarks and locations, and determining the quality of a sheet of paper.

Watermark (song)

"Watermark" is a song by the Canadian indie rock band The Weakerthans from their 2000 album Left and Leaving. It was released as a CD single in January 2001 through G7 Welcoming Committee Records in Canada and through Sub City Records in the United States, including live acoustic recordings of "Illustrated Bible Stories for Children" and "The Last Last One" as B-sides. These two tracks were recorded for radio station CKUW-FM in Winnipeg. The CD-ROM portion of the disc also includes the music video for "Watermark".
