Warren Miller (director)

Warren Miller (born October 15, 1924) is an American ski and snowboarding filmmaker. He is the founder of Warren Miller Entertainment and produced, directed and narrated his films until 1988. His credits include over 750 sports films, several books and hundreds of published non-fiction stories. His annual films on skiing and other outdoor sports are known for their photography, narrative humor, and broad appeal. He is noted for the promotion of skiing through his films spanning over 60 years and is an iconic figure in ski movie filmmaking.

Biography

Early years

Warren Anthony Miller was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, and as a young man he took up the hobbies of skiing, surfing, and photography. At the age of 18, with the U.S. ten months into World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific. On Christmas vacation in 1944 he first filmed skiing with a borrowed camera in Yosemite. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he bought his first 8mm movie camera. He and a friend moved to Sun Valley, Idaho where they camped in the parking lot of the Sun Valley ski resort, lived in a teardrop trailer and earned money as ski instructors. In their free time, they filmed each other skiing to critique and improve their ski techniques. During the summers they shifted to the California coast where they filmed each other surfing.

Warren Miller (political scientist)

Warren Miller (1924–1999) was an American political scientist in the field of American political behavior. Best known as a co-author of the seminal book, The American Voter, alongside Angus Campbell, Philip Converse and Donald Stokes, which provided the basis for the social-psychological "Michigan school" of thought in American political behavior, Miller had a full and impressive career as a political scientist.

Miller is further credited as founder of Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as well as a central figure in the bi-yearly National Election Studies (NES).

Miller was a professor of political science at the University of Michigan from 1951 until 1981 when he left for Arizona State University where he worked until his death. His last published volume, The New American Voter, which he co-authored with J. Merrill Shanks, was printed in 1996.

Warren Miller (August 31, 1921–April 1, 1966) was an American writer. Although he gained some fame for his books dealing with issues of race, as in The Cool World (1959) and The Siege of Harlem (1964), and for his more political books such as Looking for The General (1964) and Flush Times (1962), because of his early death due to lung cancer and his outspoken political views he has remained relatively unknown.

Biography

Miller received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Iowa, and was an instructor of literature there during the 1950s. He wrote several novels during the 1950s and early '60s. His novel Love Me Little was originally published under the pseudonym Amanda Vail.

Miller was married twice; first to a woman named Abby, then to a woman named Jane. His first marriage produced two daughters, Scottie and Eve.

Origins and early life

William Miller was born at Bungay, Suffolk, on 25 March 1769, the son of Thomas Miller (1731–1804), a bookseller and antiquarian, and Sally Kingsbury of Waveney House, Bungay. As a youth, he evinced a taste for drawing, and was advised by Sir Joshua Reynolds to enter the Royal Academy as a student, but in 1787 he was placed in Hookham's publishing house.
