Warren Adams

Warren Adams (November 28, 1838 – November 5, 1884) was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate States Army from lower Richland County, South Carolina. He was in command of the First South Carolina Infantry Regiment at Battery Wagner, and he served under General Matthew Calbraith Butler in the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry.

Biography

Warren Adams was born in Minervaville, South Carolina, in 1838 to Governor James Hopkins Adams and Jane Margaret Scott. His great-grandfather is Joel Adams, planter, veteran of the American Revolution, and the patriarch of the Adams family of South Carolina. He graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 1859, where he was the Commandant of the Corps of Cadets. Adams was also a French professor at The Arsenal Academy, and taught at The Hillsboro Academy in North Carolina. He married Nathalie Heyward, daughter of Nathaniel Heyward, and had nine children, four of whom survived him.

During the American Civil War he served in many engagements. In 1863, he was in command of Confederate Battery Wagner, in Charleston, South Carolina where the Confederates defeated the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry under the command of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Later in the War, Adams was in the service of General Matthew Calbraith Butler in Hampton's Legion of the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry. While leading his men, he was shot from the saddle in 1865 at the Battle of Bentonville, N.C., and fell into the arms of General Matthew Calbraith Butler. He survived his wounds and went on to live out his life at Stony Hill Plantation, Kingsville, S.C.

Adams (automobile)

The Adams was an English automobile manufactured in Bedford, England, between 1905 and 1914.

American-born Edward R. Hewitt had helped Sir Hiram Maxim to build a large steam plane in 1894. He later designed a "gas buggy" along the lines of an Oldsmobile; this machine was built by the Adams Manufacturing Company. The Adams had a supposedly foolproof epicyclic transmission with a 10 hp (7.5 kW) single-cylinder engine. Indeed, "Pedals to push, that's all" was used as the marque's slogan. Hewitt eventually returned to the United States to manufacture similar cars under his own name, after which more conventional shaft-driven cars with vertical engines were produced (beginning in 1906). Models offered included two- and four-cylinder ones and one of the first British V-8s; this last had a 35/40 hp (26/30 kW) engine based on the French Antoinette model (an aeroengine for which Adams were agents). But the V-8 was plagued by crankshaft breakages. In 1910, the company produced an advanced 16 hp (12 kW) model with front-wheel brakes; it came with compressed-air starting, tire-inflating, and jacking equipment. The "pedals-to-push" gear was still offered, as was a conventional four-speed transmission and an unusual planetary gearchange (three-speed), which was operated by a pedal that moved in a gate. The company folded for good in 1914.

Adams Crater is an impact crater in the Cebrenia quadrangle of Mars, located at 31.1°N latitude and 197.0°W longitude. It is 94.9  km in diameter and was named after Walter Sydney Adams, and the name was approved in 1973 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN).

Free warren

Free warren—often simply warren—refers to a type of franchise or privilege conveyed by a sovereign in mediaeval England to a subject, promising to hold them harmless for killing game of certain species within a stipulated area, usually a wood or small forest. The sovereign involved might be either the monarch or a marcher lord.

Law

The grant of free warren could be as a gift, or in exchange for consideration, and might be later alienated by the grantee. The stipulated area might be coextensive with the frank-tenement of the grantee, or it might be discontinuous or even at a considerable remove from the grantee's holdings. The right of free warren did not extend automatically to the freeholder of the soil.

Although the rights of free warren are usually discussed in the context of forest law, the only law which applied within the warren was common law. Thus, even though the warrant ultimately derived from the sovereign, the only statutes applied to poachers in a warren were the common-law crimes of theft and trespass.

Warren (domestic)

A domestic warren is an artificial, enclosed establishment of animal husbandry dedicated to the raising of rabbits for meat and fur. It evolved from the Anglo-Norman concept of free warren, which had been, essentially, the equivalent of a hunting license for a given woodland.

Architecture of the domestic warren

The cunicularia of the monasteries may have more closely resembled hutches or pens, than the open enclosures with specialized structures which the domestic warren eventually became. Such an enclosure or close was called a cony-garth, or sometimes conegar, coneygree or "bury" (from "burrow").

Moat and pale

To keep the rabbits from escaping, domestic warrens were usually provided with a fairly substantive moat, or ditch filled with water. Rabbits generally do not swim and avoid water. A pale, or fence, was provided to exclude predators.

Pillow mounds

The most characteristic structure of the "cony-garth" ("rabbit-yard") is the pillow mound. These were "pillow-like", oblong mounds with flat tops, frequently described as being "cigar-shaped", and sometimes arranged like the letter <E> or into more extensive, interconnected rows. Often these were provided with pre-built, stone-lined tunnels. The preferred orientation was on a gentle slope, with the arms extending downhill, to facilitate drainage. Suikoden (video game)

Suikoden (Japanese: 幻想水滸伝, Hepburn: Gensō Suikoden,  listen ) is a role-playing game published by Konami as the first installment of the Suikoden series. Developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, it was released initially in 1995 for the PlayStation in Japan. North American and British releases followed one year later, and a mainland European release came the following March. The game was also released for the Sega Saturn in 1998 only in Japan, and for Microsoft Windows in 1998 in Japan. On December 22, 2008, Suikoden was made available on the PlayStation Store for use on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable consoles.

The game centers on the political struggles of the Scarlet Moon Empire. The player controls the son of a Scarlet Moon Empire general who is destined to seek out 108 warriors (referred to as the 108 Stars of Destiny) in order to revolt against the corrupt sovereign state and bring peace to a war-torn land. The game is loosely based on the Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan, and features a vast array of characters both controllable and not, with over ninety characters usable in combat and many more able to help or hinder the hero in a variety of ways.
