James Spaulding (born July 30, 1937) is a jazz alto saxophonist and flautist.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, after a period in the US Army he moved to Chicago in 1957. There he joined the Sun Ra Arkestra, making several recordings and remaining through 1959. He subsequently freelanced as a studio musician and occasionally led his own groups before returning to Indianapolis in 1961. On relocating to New York City in 1963, he recorded extensively for Blue Note Records as a sideman. He was also a member of the World Saxophone Quartet for a time.
His brother, John Spaulding, is a sculptor who worked with brass instruments.
