Walkley Awards

The annual Walkley Awards, under the administration of the Walkley Foundation for Journalism, are presented in Australia to recognise and reward excellence in journalism. Finalists are chosen by an independent board of eminent journalists and photographers. The awards cover all media including print, television, radio, photographic and online media. They can be regarded as the Australian equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. The 33 categories judged in 2008 embraced news and feature writing; artwork, cartoons and photography; radio and TV reporting and interviewing; business, international and sport, indigenous affairs, social commentary and investigative journalism. A non-fiction book category is open to media and non-media authors. The Gold Walkley is the most prestigious award, being chosen from all category winners. The awards have been archived by the Pandora Archive since 2002.

History

Awards were instituted in five categories in 1956 by businessman Sir William Walkley, founder of Ampol Petroleum Ltd. After his death, the awards were handled by the Australian Journalists' Association which, in 1992 was merged into the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance. In 2000, the Alliance voted to establish a Walkley Foundation. In that same year, the Walkley Awards were merged with the Nikon Press Photographer of the Year Awards.

Walkley is a suburb in the north west of Sheffield in England. It lies west of Burngreave, south of Hillsborough and north-east of Crookes.

The area consists mainly of Victorian stone-fronted terraced housing and has a relatively high student population.

The area falls into the catchment of Forge Valley School, a secondary which was judged by Ofsted as inadequate in all areas in 2013 and has been in special measures ever since.

In 2013, it was reported that Walkley had the sixth highest crime rates for the city, with 1,619 incidents reported.

History

The origin of the name Walkley comes from the Old English language with the original name being "Walcas Leah", meaning Walca's forest clearing. The early Anglo-Saxon village consisted of a few structures, mainly farm buildings and workmen’s cottages. Most of the area was thick woodland with the few open quarters such as Crookesmoor and Bell Hagg Common being used for grazing cattle. Walkley was mentioned in several documents in the centuries after the Norman Conquest, in 1554 it was described as having several cottages and small holdings worked by tenants of the Lord of the Manor of Sheffield. By this time the population of Walkley was around 200.

Walkley is an electoral ward in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.

Walkley ward—which includes the districts of Netherthorpe, Upperthorpe, Walkley and parts of Neepsend—is one of the 28 electoral wards in City of Sheffield, England. It is located in the northwestern part of the city and covers an area of 3.8 km². The population of this ward in 2011 was 21,793 people in 9,654 households. The ward is in Sheffield Central Parliamentary Constituency.

Netherthorpe

Netherthorpe (grid reference SK343875) is a council estate lying south-east of the Ponderosa open space. Originally an area of working-class Victorian terraces, it was reconstructed in the 1960s as an area of tower blocks and medium-rise flats with a few houses. In the late 1990s the tower blocks were reclad and many of the other flats demolished and replaced by modern housing.
