Walker River

The Walker River is a river in west central Nevada in the United States, approximately 62 miles (100 km) long. It drains an arid portion of the Great Basin southeast of Reno, with a watershed that extends into the Sierra Nevada mountains. It flows within an enclosed basin. Due to excessive diversions, it no longer provides the principal inflow of Walker Lake. It does flow through and maintain Topaz Lake (West Fork). The river was named for explorer Joseph Reddeford Walker. Its average discharge is about 360 cubic feet per second (10 m³/s).

History

The river was probably discovered by Hudson's Bay Company fur trapper Peter Skene Ogden, who discovered the Humboldt River in 1828 and returned in 1829 to trap beaver south of the Humboldt Sink, although records are scant. In 1833, Joseph R. Walker led a party sent by Captain Benjamin Bonneville, to find a route from the Great Salt Lake to California via the Humboldt River, the Humboldt Sink, the Carson Sink, and then up into the Sierra Nevada by either the Carson River or the Walker River to near the headwaters of the Merced River and thence down to the San Joaquin River.John Charles Fremont named Walker Lake after the trapper and the United States Geographic Board named the river after Walker in its Fifth Report.

Course

The headwaters of the river are in the Mitchell Ranges and the river flows in a southerly direction between Mount Ramsay and Mount Fleming and through Fairy Glen then down onto a plain then cuts though Bath Range under Mount Rankine and veering eastward. The river then passes the Aboriginal communities of Marrkalawa and Andanangki the past the Coast Range and discharges into Blue Mud Bay and the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Arafura Sea.

The river catchment occupies an area of 9,731 square kilometres (3,757 sq mi) and is wedged between the Koolatong River catchment to the north, the Goyder River catchment to the west and the Roper River catchment to the south. It has a mean annual outflow of 3,350 gigalitres (4.382×10⁹ cu yd),

The estuary formed at the river mouth is in near pristine condition with a tidal delta. The estuary at the river mouth occupies an area of 29.5 hectares (73 acres) of open water. It is river dominated in nature with a tide dominated delta with a single channel and is surrounded by an area of 30.9 hectares (76 acres) covered with mangroves.

Walker Creek (Michigan)

Walker Creek, also known as the Walker River, is a 12.0-mile-long (19.3 km) stream in Isabella County, Michigan, in the United States. It is a trout stream; the main trout species is the brook trout. The river also supports a small population of suckers. The stream is fairly small and of variable depth. Its shore is difficult to access because of the thick vegetation growing along the river. The stream rises in northwest Isabella County and flows southeast into the Lake of the Hills and the Coldwater River.
