Waitress!

Waitress! is a 1981 comedy film directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment. It was the second in Troma's line of "sexy comedies", preceded by the 1979's Squeeze Play! and followed by 1982's Stuck on You! and 1983's The First Turn-On!.

Premise

The film follows an aspiring actress working as a waitress as she deals with a variety of crazy customers, drunken chefs, and other zany hurdles.

Waitress is a 2007 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Adrienne Shelly, who also appears in a supporting role, making this her final appearance before her murder. The film debuted at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and went into limited theatrical release in the US on May 2, 2007.

Plot

Jenna (Keri Russell) is a waitress living in the American South, trapped in an unhappy marriage with controlling bully Earl (Jeremy Sisto). She works in Joe's Pie Diner, where her job includes creating inventive pies with unusual titles inspired by her life, such as the "Bad Baby Pie" she invents after her unwanted pregnancy is confirmed. The waitresses show up late for work, talk on the phone, spend much time with personal business, and talk back to the boss. Jenna longs to run away from her dismal marriage, and is slowly accumulating money to do so. She pins her hopes for escape on a pie contest in a nearby town, which offers a $25,000 grand prize, but her husband won't let her go. Her only friends are co-workers Becky (Cheryl Hines) and Dawn (Adrienne Shelly) and regular customer Joe (Andy Griffith), the curmudgeonly owner of the diner and several other local businesses, who encourages her to begin a new life elsewhere.

Waitress is a musical with the libretto by Jessie Nelson and theatrical score by Sara Bareilles. The musical is based on the film of the same name. After premiering at the American Repertory Theater in 2015, the musical opens on Broadway in March 2016.

The musical premiered at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, running from August 2, 2015 to September 27, 2015.

The musical is directed by Diane Paulus and stars Jessie Mueller. Choreography is by Lorin Latarro, the sets by Scott Pask, and costumes are by Suttirat Anne Larlarb.

The musical is expected to open on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with previews starting on March 25, 2016, and officially on April 24.

Synopsis
