Wahoo! is an album by American pianist and arranger Duke Pearson, featuring performances recorded in 1964 and released on the Blue Note label in 1965.

Reception

The Allmusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine awarded the album 5 stars calling it "A truly wonderful advanced hard bop date, Wahoo captures pianist Duke Pearson at his most adventurous and creative... one of the finest sophisticated hard bop dates Blue Note released in the mid-'60s".

Wahoo

Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) is a scombrid fish found worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas. It is best known to sports fishermen, as its speed and high-quality flesh make it a prize game fish. In Hawaii, the wahoo is known as ono. Many Hispanic areas of the Caribbean and Central America refer to this fish as peto.

The flesh of the wahoo is white to grey, delicate to dense, and highly regarded by many gourmets. The taste is similar to mackerel, though arguably less pronounced. This has created some demand for the wahoo as a premium-priced commercial food fish. In many areas of its range, such as Hawaii, Bermuda and many parts of the Caribbean, local demand for wahoo is met by artisanal commercial fishermen, who take them primarily by trolling, as well as by recreational sports fishermen who sell their catch.

Description

Its body is elongated and covered with small, scarcely visible scales; the back is an iridescent blue, while the sides are silvery, with a pattern of irregular vertical blue bars and have razor sharp teeth. These colors fade rapidly at death. The mouth is large, and both the upper and lower jaws have a somewhat sharper appearance than those of king or Spanish mackerel.

Wahoo! (company)

Wahoo! (sometimes stylized as WAHOO!) was a United States-based corporation which built fiberglass recreational boats from 1985 to 1996. Wahoo! boats were built in Hanover Industrial Park, near Ashland, Virginia.

History

Wahoo! was founded in 1985 by Ray Curry, owner of Reliance Marine in Richmond, Virginia. While Reliance Marine had once been a Boston Whaler dealer, Curry founded Wahoo! to compete with Boston Whaler after having a falling out with them.

By 1996, Curry had decided to retire and sold Wahoo! to Brunswick Corporation, who seemed interested in the company's hull molds and European style transom designs. Brunswick integrated the hull designs into their Robalo brand. Marine Products Corporation acquired the Wahoo! trademark when it purchased Robalo from Brunswick in June 2001.

Features

Wahoo! boats were designed to be self-bailing and included features like a built-in gas tank and a drainable hull considered innovative at that time for the types of boats they were building. Unlike similar boat designs, which had foam filled hulls, Wahoo! boats had hulls lined with foam, with a space between the hull liner foam and the cap foam. This design allowed the inner hull of the boats to be drained of moisture. While primarily made of fiberglass, wood was utilized in the transom and other locations for reinforcement.

Wahoo (board game)

Wahoo is a cross and circle board game similar to Parchisi that involves moving a set number of marbles around the board, trying to get them into the safety zone. The game originated in the Appalachian hills. Most boards are used by four to six players. Wahoo has been a popular game for decades. Even today, custom-made boards proliferate on eBay and game manufacturer Parker Brothers has sold their own version of the game, under the title Aggravation, for decades.

Rules for playing Marbles:

Number of Players: 2 to 6

Object: To be the first player to move all of the player’s individual marbles out of the starting area, around the board, and into home.

Setting Up: Each player places his marbles in the starting area. After setting up, each player rolls the die. The highest number goes first, then play proceeds to the left. If two or more players roll the same number, they roll again to break the tie.

Die: The die that is being used in the game must be a normal 6-sided die that has pointed corners. The sides of the die must be about a centimeter long.

Operation Hardtack I

Operation Hardtack I was a series of 35 nuclear tests conducted by the United States in 1958 at the Pacific Proving Grounds. These tests followed the Project 58/58A series and preceded the Operation Argus series.

Operation Newsreel was a series of three high-altitude nuclear tests conducted as part of Hardtack I. The individual tests in the series were Orange, Teak and Yucca.
