Zaza (1923 film)

Zaza is a 1923 American silent romantic drama film directed and produced by Allan Dwan, and starring Gloria Swanson. This film is based on the 1899 French play of the same name produced on Broadway by David Belasco and starring Mrs. Leslie Carter. A print of the film is housed at the George Eastman House and the Library of Congress.

A previous film version was released by Paramount in 1915 starring Pauline Frederick. A third version, directed by George Cukor and starring Claudette Colbert, was released in 1939.

Zaza is a 1939 American romantic drama film made by Paramount Pictures, and directed by George Cukor. The screenplay was written by Zoë Akins, based on play the Zaza. The music score is by Frederick Hollander. The film stars Claudette Colbert (who had replaced Isa Miranda) and Herbert Marshall.

The story was filmed previously by Paramount in 1915 with Pauline Frederick and in 1923 with Gloria Swanson.

BAM (film)

BAM is a 2015 National Film Board of Canada animated short film by Howie Shia about a shy young man with a violent temper who struggles to reconcile the two sides of his personality, in an anime-influenced retelling of the myth of Hercules. It was one of the first films created entirely in 4K UltraHD by the NFB.

The filmmaker's brothers, hip-hop artist Leo Shia (also known as LEO37) and composer Tim Shia, composed the film's musical score and did the sound edit. Shia says the film was partly inspired by their grandfather, a high-ranking police official in Taiwan who was also a calligrapher and poet, "coming from a tradition of learned gentleman who also partook in violence one way or another." BAM was produced for the NFB by Maral Mohammadian and Michael Fukushima.

The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and has been nominated for an Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Award for Best Animated Short at the 4th Canadian Screen Awards.

The Mass No. 3 in F minor WAB 28 by Anton Bruckner is a setting of the mass ordinary for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, and organ ad libitum.

History

After the 1867 success of his Mass No. 1 in D minor, Bruckner was commissioned "to write a new Mass for the Burgkapelle." Bruckner wrote the first version between Septembers 1867–1868 in Linz (just before his move to Vienna).

The first rehearsals, conducted by Johann Herbeck at the court church, the Augustininerkirche, took place in 1868 or 1869, but "were badly attended by orchestral players" and were "generally unsuccessful." Ultimately, Herbeck found the mass "too long and unsingable." After various delays, the mass was finally premiered on June 16, 1872, at the Augustinerkirche, with Bruckner himself conducting. Herbeck changed his opinion of the piece, claiming to know only two masses: this one and Beethoven's Missa solemnis.Franz Liszt and even Eduard Hanslick praised the piece. A second performance occurred in the Hofmusikkapelle on 8 December 1873.
