Wani

Wain/Wani may mean:

  • Vani (custom), a child marriage custom in tribal areas of Pakistan
  • Wani, Maharashtra, a city and a municipal council in Yavatmal district in the Indian state of Maharashtra
  • Wani (scholar), a legendary scholar, sent from Korea to Japan during the reign of Emperor Ōjin
  • Wani (dragon), a Japanese dragon translated as "sea monster", "crocodile", or "shark"
  • Mangifera caesia, wani, an Indonesian term for the fruit, that resembles the mango but with white flesh
  • Wani Books
  • Wani (scholar)

Wani (Japanese: Wani, Wani Kishi (王仁, 和邇吉師)) is a semi-legendary scholar who is said to have been sent to Japan by Baekje of southwestern Korea during the reign of Emperor Ōjin. He used to be associated with the introduction of the Chinese writing system to Japan.

    Original sources and analysis

Wani is mentioned only in Japanese history books; he is not recorded in Chinese or Korean sources. The main sources of Wani's biography are the Nihon Shoki(720) and the Kojiki(712).

In the 16th year, in spring, in February, Wani had come. Then, Prince Uji-no-Waki-Iratsuko took him as his teacher, learned various classics under him and there was nothing he didn't become thoroughly acquainted with. This so-called Wani was the progenitor of the Fumi-no-Obito clan.

These stories have long been questioned by scholars. Ten volumes are too much for the Analects, and more importantly, his alleged arrival predates the composition of the Thousand Character Classic (the early 6th century). Arai Hakuseki (1657–1725) considered that Wani had brought a certain book of Elementary Learning which the Kojiki had confused with the Thousand Character Classic. Motoori Norinaga (1730–1801) claimed that it was pointless to care about details because the Thousand Character Classic was mentioned just as a typical book of Elementary Learning. Some assume a different version of the Thousand Character Classic was brought but this theory has no clear basis. In short, it is not unnatural for people like Wani to have come to Japan around that time, but there is no strong evidence determining whether Wani really existed.

    Wani (surname)

Wani or Wain word comes from Sanskrit language, root word Wania meaning Businessman or Shopkeeper. The term is used for traders and merchants. Wani mainly is a caste and a surname used in kashmir. The Wani's have different names given according to their field of trade. Wain or Wani is one of the most common and famous Surname of Jammu and Kashmir. The ancestors of Wani's were Hindus who converted to become Muslims.

    Origin

Wain or Wani are extracts from some hindu tribe. There are many different traditions about which tribe they come from, but all historians agree that before accepting Islam they were part of the hindu caste known as Waish. In fact, some people think that the word Wain comes from Waish. Waish is the merchant caste among hindus. Even after accepting Islam Wains and Wanis have kept trade and commerce as the source of their livelihood. These people can get involved with the largest to the smallest trade. Perhaps it is for this reason that the 1891 Census of India, on page 167, says about them, "Wains and Wanis are the merchants of Kashmir and Ladakh".
