Västerås

Västerås [vɛstərˈoːs] is a city in central Sweden, located on the shore of Lake Mälaren in the province Västmanland, some 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Stockholm. The city had a population of 110,877 inhabitants in 2010, out of the municipal total of 137,207 (2010) (though calculating not the whole municipality but all Västerås' suburbs, the number becomes 128,840 (2010).

Västerås is the seat of Västerås Municipality, the capital of Västmanland County and an episcopal see.

Attractions

For people interested in aviation, Västerås Flight museum is well worth a visit. It is only open on Sundays and if you're keen to try one of their four real flight simulators contact the museum in advance. Sport interested can find an indoor bandy stadium, and the club Västerås SK is indeed a classic Swedish Bandy team. However, ice hockey is equally popular when Västerås IK play at home. The town has also had clubs in the highest Swedish Football League, Allsvenskan, but so far without any success. Also the town was represented in the top Swedish handball league during many years.
