Voila is the seventh studio album by the American singer Belinda Carlisle, released in 2007. It was Carlisle's first studio album in over a decade, and is a covers album of "classic French chansons and pop standards", much different from Carlisle's previous English language pop records. The album was critically praised however did sell moderately. Although all of the songs are sung in French, many of the musicians featured on the album are Irish. The English musician Brian Eno also performs keyboards on the album.
In an October 2006 press release describing the album, Carlisle said "After I moved to France, I became familiar with the classic French chansons and a lot of French pop music. I realized there was a whole world of artists and singers I was not familiar with. As I discovered all these amazing songs, I came to love this music and wanted to record some of them with a playful, contemporary feel."
Describing how music can transcend any language barrier Carlisle stated, "You don't really have to know what's being sung to know that 'Avec Les Temps' [sic] is a devastating love song. When I heard that song the first time, it broke my heart."
Voilà is the first album of the Brazilian singer Rhaissa Bittar, who arose from the alternative music scene of São Paulo (Brazil). It was released in 2010.
The Voilà album, Rhaissa Bittar's first work, stands out especially due to the theatrical tone of its lyrics and the arrangements of the songs. The album mixes a variety of musical genres such as Choro, Tango, Samba, Folk, Jazz, Pop and Rock.
The songs are like chronicles, small stories of our day-to-days that come to life in Rhaissa's voice. One story is about a posh girl that had a chunk of her cuticle pulled when getting her nails done ("Chilique Chique"). Another song talks about a girl in love that had to bring along her little sibling on a date ("Piquenique no Horto"). There is also a story of a carrier pigeon who got tired of carrying messages from traffickers in a prison, and wants to retire at See Square ("Pombo Correto").
Voilà was recorded at the Panela Produtora studios in 2009 with the musical direction of Daniel Galli. The album has notable cameo appearances such as the clarinetist Nailor Proveta from (Banda Mantiqueira), the violinist Ricardo Herz, accordionist Lulinha Alencar and drummer Pedro Ito. Another special guest is the singer and songwriter Mauricio Pereira on the track "Boneca de Palha".
It's cold outside in the middle of the winter and my brain's in the fridge
(Would you know what shape I'm in)
Point things in the better I'm lucky if I even give in to the sin
(Would you know what shape I'm in)
And it's all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
Photography mixed in the monogamy keepin' my world happenin'
(would you know what shape I'm in)
I know that I'm better when I know that you are better and I'll hold you again
(would you know what shape I'm in)
And its all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
And it's all been luck until now
I only hope that you're still 'round me now
And it's gonna rage
it's gonna stay with you always
Every second counts on you to prove you're off the ground
It's cold outside in the middle of the winter and my brains in the fridge
Point things in the better I'm lucky if I even give in to the sin
And its all been luck until now
And its all been luck until now
And its all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down now
And its all been luck until now
Caught in the race of up to down
And it's all been luck until now
I only hope that you're still 'round me
