Vigil

A vigil, from the Latin vigilia meaning wakefulness (Greek: pannychis,παννυχίς or agrypniaἀγρυπνία), is a period of purposeful sleeplessness, an occasion for devotional watching, or an observance. The Italian word vigilia has become generalized in this sense and means "eve" (as in on the eve of the war).

Eves of religious celebrations

A vigil may be held on the eve of a major religious festival (feast days), observed by remaining awake—"watchful"—as a devotional exercise or ritual observance on the eve of a holy day. Such liturgical vigils usually consist of psalms, prayers and hymns, possibly a sermon or readings from the Holy Fathers, and sometimes periods of silent meditation.

The term "morning" means that the observance begins on the evening before. In traditional Christianity, the celebration of liturgical feasts begins on the evening before the holy day because the Early Church continued the Jewish practice of beginning the day at sunset rather than midnight.

Most likely the best known vigil is the Easter Vigil held at night between Holy Saturday and Resurrection Sunday.

Vigil was a 1980s alternative rock band based out of Baltimore, Maryland.

Biography

The band originally formed under the name Here Today as part of Baltimore's alternative/gothic music scene in the early 1980s. Here Today's 1983 "Whistle in the Yard" 12" single drew some attention from CBS Records, and they were signed in 1984 by CBS A&R rep Howard Thompson. Vigil recorded half an album produced by John Anthony and the band's manager, Sam Prager, before Thompson departed CBS. Without Thompson's stewardship, Vigil agreed to a buyout of the band's contract and was quickly signed by Chrysalis Records. In 1987, they released their eponymous debut album. The band toured in support of this album as the opening act for The Stranglers.

In 1989, Vigil returned to the studio to record a second album, tentatively titled Escape Artist, but were dropped by Chrysalis. One track from this period, "Therapist", was released on the soundtrack to A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

Connor later formed the Jo Connor Band.

Tribeč

Tribeč is a crystalline mountain range in western Slovakia, in the Inner Western Carpathians within the Fatra-Tatra Area, roughly between the towns of Nitra, Partizánske and Zlaté Moravce. It is surrounded by the Danubian Lowland, Pohronský Inovec, Vtáčnik mountains and the Upper Nitra Basin. It is 50 km long and has maximum width of 18 km. Beech trees are predominating in the area. The highest mountain is Veľký Tribeč at 829.6 m (2,721.8 ft). The area belongs to the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area.

Tribe

A tribe is viewed, historically or developmentally, as a social group existing before the development of, or outside, states. A tribe is a distinct people, dependent on their land for their livelihood, who are largely self-sufficient, and not integrated into the national society. It is perhaps the term most readily understood and used by the general public. Stephen Corry, director of Survival International, the world's only organisation dedicated to indigenous rights, has defined tribal people as "those which have followed ways of life for many generations that are largely self-sufficient, and are clearly different from the mainstream and dominant society". This definition, however, would not apply in countries in the Middle East such as Iraq, where the entire population is a member of one tribe or another and therefore tribalism itself is dominant and mainstream.

There are an estimated one hundred and fifty million tribal individuals worldwide, constituting around forty percent of indigenous individuals. However, although nearly all tribal people are also indigenous, there are some who are not indigenous to the areas where they live now.
