Vermin

Vermin (colloquially varmint or varmit) are pests or nuisance animals, especially those that threaten human society by spreading diseases or destroying crops and livestock. Use of the term implies the need for extermination programs. Since the term is defined in relation to human activities, which species are included vary from area to area and person to person.

The term derives from the Latin vermis (worm), and was originally used for the worm-like larvae of certain insects, many of which infest foodstuffs. The term 'varmint' (and 'vermint') has been found in sources from c. 1530-1540s.

Spelling distinction

Varmint or varmit is an American-English colloquialism, particularly common to the American east and South-east within the nearby bordering states of the vast Appalachia region. The term describes farm pests which raid farms as opposed to infest farms—mainly predators such as foxes, weasels, and coyotes, sometimes even wolves or rarely, bears, but also, to a lesser degree, herbivores and burrowing animals that directly damage crops and land.

Vermin (comics)

Vermin (Edward Whelan) is a fictional character, a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Publication history

The character's first appearance was in Captain America #272 (August 1982). He was created by J. M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck.

Fictional character biography

Edward Whelan suffered severe physical and sexual abuse as a child from his father. As an adult, he became a geneticist working for Baron Zemo and Primus I (who was impersonating Arnim Zola). In an experiment with the Primus/Arnim Zola imposter, his skin becomes a light pinkish fur color and he ends up resembling a cannibalistic, humanoid rat. Vermin is defeated by Captain America and turned over to S.H.I.E.L.D. He escapes S.H.I.E.L.D., however, and returns to the service of Zola and Zemo. Vermin is shackled by Zemo with Captain America in a dungeon; he battles, mutates, escapes, and wounds Zemo.

Vermin later battles Captain America and Spider-Man at a street festival and is captured. Some time later, Vermin kidnaps women off the streets into the sewers, murders and devours them. He is defeated and captured by Kraven the Hunter disguised as Spider-Man; Kraven sought to prove himself superior to Spider-Man by defeating Vermin alone when Spider-Man needed Captain America to help him. He is forced by Kraven to battle the real Spider-Man, then allowed to escape; he is finally captured and turned over to the police by Spider-Man. During the breakout from the supervillain prison the Vault, Vermin assists Venom in hunting down Warden Marsh. Under Venom's orders, Vermin later teams with Powderkeg and Mentallo; they temporarily defeat Iron Man and Hank Pym. Mentallo's powers are used to neutralize the break out.

Hungerface

by: Vermin

Put behind a wall of lies, slowly falling apart
Bars of anguish bars of grief, keeping the hunger inside
Emotions…deformed and disturbed
Only awaiting the moment
When the passion is released
You hunger
You want it
You can't control it
It's in your face
Your hungerface
It's in your face you can taste it
You want it bad you know you can reach it
When you get started you can't be stopped
It's like a drug but you don't care
There is no …..salvation
Swallowed by lust, hunger for more
