Vats Church

Vats Church (Norwegian: Vats kyrkje) is a parish church in Vindafjord municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Vats at the southern end of the lake Vatsvatnet. The church is part of the Vats parish in the Haugaland deanery in the Diocese of Stavanger. The white, wooden church was built in 1855 using designs by the architect Hans Linstow.

History

The first church at Vats was most likely a medieval stave church. That church was replaced by a second church in 1640. That church, in turn, was replaced by the present church in 1855.

Vats

Vats or Vatne is a village in Vindafjord municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The village is located in the traditional district of Haugalandet between the southern end of the lake Vatsvatnet and the northern end of the Vatsfjorden. It sits about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southwest of the village of Sandeid and about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) southeast of the village of Skjold. Vats Church is located in this village.

The village was the administrative center of the old municipality of Vats from 1891 until the municipality's dissolution in 1965.

The village area is an important industrial location. The oil platforms Statfjord, Gullfaks and Troll were all built here. The Norwegian computer and software company Hatteland Group responsible for the AutoStore system is also headquartered in the village.

Vats (clan)

Vats is a gotra of Brahmins & Kshatriyas found in India. Mainly found in northern states of India The Puranas mentions that, before merging into the Magadha kingdom, the last king of the Vats was named Udyan. This probably means that they merged during the rule of Ajatashatru from c. 492 BC – c. 460.

Vats (municipality)

Vats is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. Located in the traditional district of Haugaland, the municipality existed from 1891 until 1965. The 124-square-kilometre (48 sq mi) municipality encompassed the land to the east and west surrounding the Vatsfjorden and the lake Vatsvatnet. Vats is typically divided into two parts Øvre Vats (around the lake in the north) and Nedre Vats (around the fjord in the south).

History

The municipality of Vats was established on 1 January 1891 when it was split off from the municipality of Skjold (see formannskapsdistrikt). Initially, Vats had 1,095 residents. On 1 January 1965, the municipality was dissolved due to recommendations of the Schei Committee. The majority of Vats (population: 1,128) was merged with parts of Imsland, Skjold, and Vikedal, as well as all of Sandeid to form the new municipality of Vindafjord. On the same day, the Breidal and Stølsvik farms on the south side of the Yrkefjorden (population: 16) became a part of Tysvær municipality.
