235 Van Buren

235 Van Buren is a high-rise condominium building located in Chicago's Loop neighborhood near the Willis Tower and the 311 South Wacker Drive Building. The 46 story skyscraper was designed by Perkins & Will and built by CMK Companies, a Chicago-based real estate development company. As the building's name suggests, it is located at 235 West Van Buren Street adjacent to the Chicago River at the eastern terminus of Eisenhower Expressway.

Completed in January 2010, it is a residential building with 714 condominium units, an 11-story, 570-spot parking garage, as well as approximately 10,000 sq. ft. of retail space located on the building's first two floors. The building is currently home to the South Loop Market, Van Buren Gentlemen's Salon, and the 235 Van Buren On-Site Sales Center.

Each residence has modern interiors with floor-to-ceiling windows, 10 foot ceilings, and exposed concrete accents. The building is aimed at first time homebuyers looking for a 1 to 3 bedroom condo. It also has a penthouse on the top floor which was featured on an episode of HGTV's House Hunters TV Show.

Van Buren was the codename given to what would have been Fallout 3, a role-playing video game that was being developed by Black Isle Studios before the parent company, Interplay Entertainment, laid off the PC development team on December 8, 2003, effectively cancelling the game. Prior to its cancellation, Van Buren was set to carry on the Fallout series, but was not a sequel to Fallout 2. An official Fallout 3, unrelated to the abandoned Van Buren project, was developed by Bethesda Game Studios after Interplay sold the single-player rights to the franchise to Bethesda Softworks. It was released October 28, 2008.

Several Black Isle staff members would go on to form Obsidian Entertainment, and many themes, factions and characters of Van Buren were incorporated in Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas, published by Bethesda Softworks in 2010.

A trademark was filed for "Van Buren" on 23 October 2014 by Roxy Friday LLC, a company associated with inXile Entertainment.

The earliest known reference to the settlement dates from 772. The castle built by the Lords of Buren is first mentioned in 1298. The town was granted city rights in 1395 by Sir Alard IV of Buren, which led to the construction of a defensive wall and a moat. Significant parts of these still exist. In 1492 the region was promoted to a county (i.e. ruled by a count), but due to its isolated position it never became very important economically. By 1574 the previously Catholic parish church of Saint Lambert (Dutch: Sint Lambertus) had already become Calvinist Reformed Protestant.

Buren is the easternmost village on the island of Ameland, one of the West Frisian Islands and part of the Netherlands.

Rixt van het Oerd

Buren is also home to the infamous legend of the witch Rixt van het Oerd (e.g. Rixt of Oerd). This old lady would tie a lantern on a cow who she would chase into the dunes. She would hope for a ship to mistake the cow for a lighthouse, thinking it was a safe haven. Instead the ship would run aground on the sand bars along the coastline, leaving its cargo for her to pick up from the beach. One day in a heavy storm, she practiced her reckless way of making extra money and encountered the dead body of a drowned sailor. As she came closer she realized that it was her own son, Sjoerd. After realizing what she has done, every time there is now a storm raging over Ameland, she howls out her son's name in the wind.

In remembrance of the legend of Rixt van het Oerd, there is a small statue in the center of Buren.

500 years ago the population consisted of pirates and bandits, today the residents live from the tourist industry (school classes from Germany visit Ameland and stay at Buren.)
