Vamoose Bus is a privately owned intercity bus line located in New York City. It provides daily transportation between New York City and three suburban cities in the Washington, DC metro area.
The New York City pickup and drop-off stop is located in Midtown Manhattan near Penn Station/Madison Square Garden. The Washington, DC metro area stops are located in Bethesda, MD; Arlington, VA (Rosslyn area) and Lorton, VA. The Lorton route was initiated in January 2011.
The price for a seat on the Vamoose Bus starts at $20. In 2010, Vamoose added a new luxury service called the "Gold Bus". The gold bus primarily targets business travelers willing to pay a premium for first-class services i.e. wide leather seats, more legroom, fewer passengers per bus etc. The fare for a seat on the Gold Bus starts at $50.
Tickets must be purchased in advance via the website or by telephone. Upon purchase, passengers are given a reservation number and a printable e-ticket which is also sent via email.
Vamoose was an early steam powered yacht built for William Randolph Hearst by Nathaniel Greene Herreshoff at the Herreshoff shipyard based on a torpedo boat design. The Vamoose was noted for its power and function over form design aesthetic rare among yachts of the time.
The Vamoose was commissioned by a young William Randolph Hearst in the winter of 1890. Lead engineer Nathaniel Herreshoff incorporated many technologies from the USS Cushing torpedo boat originally developed for the US Navy. The focus of the design was speed above all else, thus an 875 horsepower quadruple expansion steam engine was chosen to power the Vamoose. The aerodynamics were aided by a sleek torpedo style hull shape and lack of sails which allowed the Vamoose to achieve a top speed of 27 miles per hour (43 km/h).
The Vamoose was transported across the Isthmus of Panama on a specially designed crib spanning three railroad cars though was refused final transport to the Pacific and onto San Francisco Bay due to an argument with the owner of the railroad stemming from an unkind review written in Hearst's San Francisco Examiner. Thus the Vamoose was shipped back to New York where it entered service primarily to compete in races at the local yacht club.
