Valérie

Valérie is a 1969 black-and-white Quebec film starring Danielle Ouimet, who plays Valérie, and Guy Godin. It was the first Quebec film to show nudity.

Plot Summary

Valérie is the story of a comely young woman (Danielle Ouimet) who, upon leaving a convent with the leader of a motorcycle gang, discovers the hippy culture of Montreal and turns to prostitution. This improbable storyline, made famous by the frank display of nudity and sexuality, came from a culture that was still labouring under a strong sense of Catholic guilt. It was the first of a group of films known as maple-syrup porn and it turned an unprecedented gross of over a million, making it the top domestic box office film of its time.

Valerie is almost always a feminine given name in English, derived directly from the French Valérie (a female-only name) and ultimately from the Latin Valeria. Valerie is also used as a nickname for Valeria. Both are often shortened to Val. Valéry or Valery is a masculine given name in parts of Europe (particularly in France and Russia), as well as a common surname in Francophone countries. Another, much rarer, French masculine form can be Valėre.

Both feminine and masculine forms have derivatives in many European languages, and are especially common in Russian and other Eastern European languages. However the masculine form is not always a cognate of the feminine: it can have a distinct etymology.
