Concept

A concept is an abstraction or generalization from experience or the result of a transformation of existing ideas. The concept is instantiated (reified) by all of its actual or potential instances, whether these are things in the real world or other ideas. Concepts are treated in many if not most disciplines both explicitly, such as in psychology, philosophy, etc., and implicitly, such as in mathematics, physics, etc. In informal use the word concept often just means any idea, but formally it involves the abstraction component.

In metaphysics, and especially ontology, a concept is a fundamental category of existence. In contemporary philosophy, there are at least three prevailing ways to understand what a concept is:

Concept (board game)

Concept is a 2014 board game developed by Alain Rivollet and Gaëtan Beaujannot and published by Repos. It was nominated for the Jeu de l'année prize in Cannes in 2014.

Rules

Concept is a quiz board game where players have to guess a concept, which can be a word, a name, or a phrase. Hints about the concept are given by marking the concept, its attributes, and related concepts on the game board with different-coloured markers. Giving verbal hints is not allowed.

The official rules state that the game is played with teams of two players each. On each team's turn, they draw a card and choose a concept from there. Each card has three difficulty levels (blue, red and black) with three concepts each.

The team then places a green question mark on the picture illustrating the main point of the concept. They can then further specify the concept with green cubes defining the attributes of the concept and optionally also specify related concepts with red, blue, yellow and black exclamation points and accordingly coloured cubes.

Concept (band)

Concept is an Italian progressive power metal band, formed in 2000.

History

After a short experience under the name of A.T.T. (About Traverse Tracks) and after releasing the EP "Abstractive Fallacy" in September 1999, Mariano Croce, Andrea Mastroianni, Gianni Carcione and David Folchitto (now Stormlord, Prophilax), in January 2000, formed the band Concept, producing their first EP "Time Before" in February 2000. In June 2000 they signed a deal with the record label Underground Symphony. Soon after, the bass player Andrea Arcangeli (now DGM) joined the band.

Their first full-length cd Reason and Truth was recorded in the spring of 2001 at the Zenith Studios (Lucca – Italy); because of some negative circumstances, the cd will be mixed only in October 2002, at the New Sin Studio (Loria (TV) – Italy), and released in 2003.
On March 1, 2005, the band released their second album, The Divine Cage, recorded between May and June 2004 at the Cromas Studios (Rome - Italy) and at the New Sin Studio by Luigi Stefanini.

Valkyrie

In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain") is one of a host of female figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar (Old Norse "single (or once) fighters"). When the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens and sometimes connected to swans or horses.

Valkyries are attested in the Poetic Edda, a book of poems compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources; the Prose Edda and Heimskringla (by Snorri Sturluson), and Njáls saga, a Saga of Icelanders, all written in the 13th century. They appear throughout the poetry of skalds, in a 14th-century charm, and in various runic inscriptions.

Valkyrie (magazine)

Valkyrie was a UK role-playing magazine. The magazine was started in 1994. It was published by Partisan Press and edited originally by Dave Renton (original editor of Role Player Independent) and then taken over by Jay Forster. Renton held the post from 1994 to 1998 and Forster from 1999 to 2003.

Some claimed that it was the successor to White Dwarf amongst the UK role-playing community with numerous contributors from across the hobby, including Phil Masters and Marcus Rowland.

The magazine was resurrected as a quarterly with issue 19 and ran for several years before ceasing publication with issue 28. It folded in 2003.

Valkyrie (mixed martial arts)

Valkyrie (ヴァルキリー, Varukirī), sometimes styled VALKYRIE in capitals, was a women's mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion. It was the sister of Japanese MMA promotion Cage Force, both operated by Greatest Common Multiple (GCM) Communication. Contrary to other Japanese women MMA promotions at the time, it featured a cage instead of a ring and used the same venues as Cage Force.

History

Around 2004 (2004), GCM Communication, the parent company of Japanese promotion Cage Force, had already hosted some all-women MMA events named Cross Section and with the imminent dissolution of female MMA promotion Smackgirl, GCM Communication announced at the event Cage Force 08 on 27 September 2008 (2008-09-27) that the company would hold a new all-female promotion which would be named Valkyrie and would have its first event on 8 November 2008 (2008-11-08) in a double-header event with Cage Force. Takeshi Nagao, a former Smackgirl executive, and Yasuko Mogi were appointed as producers. Mogi announced several details of the promotion, such as the weight classes and the rules, which would be essentially the same as those used in Cage Force, and also that former Smackgirl Lightweight Champion Yuka Tsuji would participate in the promotion in a match against Mei Yamaguchi. Other matches would be announced at later dates. As part of its business strategy, Valkyrie events were held before Cage Force, in this way sharing venue, cage and other resources.
