V/STOL

A vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL) aircraft is an airplane able to take-off or land vertically or on short runways. Vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft are a subset of V/STOL craft that do not require runways at all. Generally, a V/STOL aircraft needs to be able to hover. Helicopters are not considered under the V/STOL classification as the classification is only used for airplanes, aircraft that achieve lift in forward flight by planing the air, thereby achieving speed and fuel efficiency that is typically greater than helicopters are capable of.

Most V/STOL aircraft types were experiments or outright failures from the 1950s to 1970s. V/STOL aircraft types that have been produced in large numbers include the Harrier, Yak-38 Forger and V-22 Osprey.

A rolling takeoff, sometimes with a ramp (ski-jump), reduces the amount of thrust required to lift an aircraft from the ground (compared with vertical takeoff), and hence increases the payload and range that can be achieved for a given thrust. For instance, the Harrier is incapable of taking off vertically with a full weapons and fuel load. Hence V/STOL aircraft generally use a runway if it is available. I.e. short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) or conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) operation is preferred to VTOL operation.

Javelin V6 STOL

The Javelin V6 STOL is an American STOL homebuilt aircraft that was designed and produced by Javelin Aircraft of Wichita, Kansas. When it was available the aircraft was supplied in the form of plans for amateur construction.

Design and development

The V6 STOL consists of plans to power an existing certified Piper PA-20 Pacer airframe with a Ford Motor Company V6 engine and moving it from the Certified Category to the Experimental Amateur-built category.

The aircraft features a strut-braced high wing, a four-seat enclosed cabin accessed via doors, fixed conventional landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration.

Since it uses a standard Piper Pacer airframe, the aircraft is made from welded steel tubing, covered in doped aircraft fabric. Its 32.00 ft (9.8 m) span wing employs a USA 35B airfoil, mounts flaps and has a wing area of 168.00 sq ft (15.608 m²). The standard conversion installs a 230 hp (172 kW) Ford V6 powerplant, driving a fixed pitch propeller, although engines of up to 300 hp (224 kW) can be employed. The 230 hp (172 kW) engine gives the aircraft a sea level, standard day takeoff distance of 150 ft (46 m) and a landing distance of 300 ft (91 m).

Åstol

Åstol is a locality situated south of Tjörn Municipality (close to Marstrand), Västra Götaland County, Sweden with 210 inhabitants in 2010. Åstol has always been a center for fishing, especially for herring-fish, mackerel and flatfish. This is mainly due to the location of the island.

Åstol is also well known for its harbour. The harbour has an excellent location and is protected against wind and waves. Åstol also has a harbour for visitors, and is located along both south and north side of the harbour. The port has approximately 50 harbour spots for visitors. The depth of the harbour is 4,5 m which makes it possible for big boats such as steam-boats and galleons to add.

Located in the center of the island you can find a small "Handelsbod"/store were you can buy almost everything that is required to live on the island. There is also a restaurant, café and a kiosk. Another thing that makes Åstol special is their smokehous, called Åstols Rökeri.

Åstol's smokehouse contains 6 different sections. The restaurant, "Iseriet", a beer garden called "Perrys Bar", a fish store, Björn's Pictures and the smokehouse. At "Åstols Rökeri" you can order smoked eel, herring, mackerel, salmon and shrimp.

Stol (Serbia)

Stol (Serbian Cyrillic: Стол) is a mountain in eastern Serbia, near the town of Bor. Its highest peak has an elevation of 1,156 meters above sea level. Like nearby Veliki Krš and Mali Krš, Stol has a number of pronounced karst formations. There is a mountain hut with around 35 beds, maintained by the mountaineering society "Crni vrh" from Bor.
