USS Sylvania

USS Sylvania has been the name of two ships in the service of the United States Navy.

  • USS Sylvania (AKA-44), an Artemis-class attack cargo ship, which served from 1945 until 1946.
  • USS Sylvania (AFS-2), a Mars class combat stores ship, which served from 1964 until 1994.
  • USS Sylvania (AKA-44)

USS Sylvania (AKA-44) was an Artemis-class attack cargo ship named after the minor planet 519 Sylvania, which in turn is a word for forests. She served as a commissioned ship for 18 months.

Sylvania (AKA-44), ex-MC hull 1905, was laid down on 24 February 1945 by the Walsh-Kaiser Co., Inc., Providence, R.I.; launched on 25 April 1945; sponsored by Miss Mary H. O'Neil; delivered to the Navy and commissioned on 19 May 1945, Lt. Comdr. F. O. Bryce, USNR, in command.

    Service history

Sylvania completed fitting out and loading at Boston and sailed for Norfolk on 4 June to begin her shakedown training. Training was completed on 15 June; and, six days later, the ship got underway for Marseilles, France. She arrived there on 3 July and, nine days later, was underway for the Philippine Islands. The Panama Canal was transited on 27 July; and, after a port call at Eniwetok, Marshall Islands, the transport arrived at Manila on 26 August. The cargo and troops from France were off-loaded; and, until 19 September, vehicles, cargo, and troops were loaded which were destined for Japan.

    USS Sylvania (AFS-2)

USS Sylvania (AFS-2), a Mars-class combat stores ship, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named Sylvania.

Sylvania was laid down on 18 August 1962 at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company in San Diego, California; launched on 10 August 1963; sponsored by Mrs. Cyrus R. Vance; and commissioned on 11 July 1964, with Captain Bernard A. Lienhard in command.

    Service history

    19641970

At the time of commissioning, Sylvania was the second of a new class of combat store ship designed to combine the functions of the AF (store ship), AKS (stores issue ship), and AVS (aviation issue ship). She completed fitting out and, after sea trials, departed California for duty with the Atlantic Fleet. The Panama Canal was transited on 11 August, and the ship arrived at Norfolk on 16 October 1964 for post-shakedown availability. Upon completion of this, the ship operated in the Norfolk area until the spring of 1965.
