Bella Swan

Isabella Marie "Bella" Swan (later Bella Cullen) is the fictional protagonist of the Twilight series, written by Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight series, consisting of the novels Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn, is primarily narrated from Bella's point-of-view.

In Twilight, Bella moves to her father's home in Forks, Washington, meets the mysterious Cullen family, and falls in love with Edward Cullen. However, she soon discovers that the family is a coven of vampires. Bella expresses a desire to become a vampire herself, against Edward's wishes. In the second novel, New Moon, Edward and the other Cullens leave Forks in an effort to keep Bella safe from the vampire world. Jacob Black, a member of the Quileute tribe who is also a shape shifter taking a wolf form, comforts the distraught and severely depressed Bella. She comes to care deeply for Jacob, though less than she loves Edward. In Eclipse, Bella becomes engaged to Edward, and they marry in Breaking Dawn. Edward then transforms Bella into a vampire after she nearly dies giving birth to their daughter, Renesmee. Bella has the ability to shield her mind (from mind reading, attacks, etc.), an ability she's had from the beginning. But once she is transformed into a vampire, her ability is enhanced to where she can also expand her shield to protect others from mind control.

Upside (film)

Upside is a 2010 American dramatic film written and directed by Ken Horstmann and set in Atlanta, Georgia. It stars Randall Bentley.

Plot

High school senior Solomon White pretty much has his future as a college lacrosse player laid out for him till a concussion has him seeing everything upside-down. Not knowing how long this condition will take to right itself, Solomon meets lecturer Wren Woods at a support group for the visually impaired (mostly all blind, as is she). With future plans at least on hold, he begins hanging out with her, who - along with Mrs. Buck (Solomon's English teacher) and Prof. Craig Parker (a writing mentor Mrs. Buck arranged for Solomon) - guides Solomon into becoming a man who can make decisions for himself and into considering accepting Christ in his life.

Production

The lacrosse scenes in the film were staged by Richie Meade, head coach for the United States Naval Academy.

Solomon Olds and Jacob Olds from Family Force 5 appear in the film dancing in the scene that features their song, along with Solomon's wife Lauren.

Upside (magazine)

Upside was a San Francisco-based business and technology magazine for venture capitalists. It was published from 1989 to 2002. It had a circulation above 300,000.

History

Beginnings

Upside was started by banker Anthony B. Perkins and technical writer Rich Karlgaard as a magazine "for Silicon Valley about Silicon Valley." Venture capitalist Tim Draper was the main initial backer, along with Silicon Valley Bank founder Roger Smith and Estée Lauder's grandson Gary Lauder. Jay Whitehead was its Managing Publisher. In its early issues, the publication published controversial articles on investment firms Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Hambrecht & Quist. Upside quickly became widely read in the Silicon Valley tech community but burned through $3 million between 1989 and 1992 and was constantly trying to raise money.

Departure of founders

Perkins was removed by the magazine's board of directors as publisher on May 2, 1992. He would go on to start Red Herring (magazine), which had a similar focus to Upside. Within a month, Karlgaard left to become editor of Forbes ASAP.Forbes ASAP was originally announced as a joint venture between Forbes and Upside, but Upside was excluded from the venture after the hiring of Karlgaard, and this angered magazine staff.
