Madison (name)

Madison is a surname of English origin, which has become a popular given name in the United States. Madison, commonly spelled Maddison in Northeastern England, is a variant of Mathieson, meaning son of Matthew, although possibly occasionally standing for son of Maddy, where Maddy is a pet form of Maud.

Madison is also used as a given name. As a name, it has become popular for girls in recent decades. Its rise is generally attributed to the 1984 release of the movie Splash. From a practically non-existent girl's name before 1985, Madison rose to being the second-most-popular name given to female babies in 2001. It has since declined in popularity as a girl's name, however, slipping to seventh place by 2009.

As a masculine given name, Madison can be found within the top 1,000 names for boys in the United States up until about 1952. Madison returned to the top 1,000 ranked boy's names in 1987, remaining there through 1999, and it also was the 858th-most-common boys' name in 2004, but it remains uncommon as a boy's given name.

Madison is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 510 at the 2000 census. The borough was named for James Madison, 4th President of the United States.

Geography

Madison is located at 40°14′55″N 79°40′46″W / 40.24861°N 79.67944°W / 40.24861; -79.67944 (40.248616, -79.679527).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 510 people, 219 households, and 158 families residing in the borough. The population density was 962.6 people per square mile (371.5/km²). There were 225 housing units at an average density of 424.7 per square mile (163.9/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.41% White, 0.20% Asian, and 0.39% from two or more races.

There were 219 households out of which 22.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.74.

Madison (Shore Line East station)

Madison is a passenger rail station along the Shore Line East commuter rail line, which runs on the Northeast Corridor between New Haven and New London. Madison station consists of a mid-sized parking lot and one high-level side platform on the southbound side of the tracks. A second platform and three-story parking garage are planned for the future. The garage will allow the station, which is less than half a mile from I-95 and US-1, to serve as a park-and-ride station.

Madison is a commuter-only station; Amtrak's Acela Express and Northeast Regional services run through the station without stopping. Madison is served by about 11 Shore Line East trains in each direction on weekdays and 5 in each direction on weekends.

History

New Haven Railroad

The New Haven & New London Railroad was charted in 1848, began construction in 1850, and opened for service in July 1852. A station was located off Wall Street just north of downtown Madison. The line was owned by the New York, Providence and Boston Railroad (the "Stonington Road") from 1858 to 1862, and by the Shore Line Railway from 1864 until it was acquired by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad (the "New Haven") in 1870. The New Haven continued local service along the route, including the stop at Madison, for nearly another century. Commuter service east of New Haven ceased on January 1, 1969, after the New Haven merged into Penn Central.

Biography

After only making minor cameo appearances in dramas, Marco is best known for appearing on popular reality show We Got Married alongside Son Dam Bi.

He later appeared in After School's music video "AH."

Marco appeared as a cast member of MBC Every1's 2010 family reality show Family Needed: Season 4 along with Park Jun-gyu, Kang Soo-ji, Actress Kim Jung-min and girl group Secret's Han Sunhwa, and was a regular cast member of the MBC's Sunday Sunday Night show Danbi. In 2011, Lee married Korean golfer, Ahn Shi-hyun and they were divorced in 2013.

Van

A van is a kind of vehicle used for transporting goods or people. Depending on the type of van it can be bigger or smaller than a truck and SUV, and bigger than an automobile. There is some varying in the scope of the word across the different English-speaking countries. The smallest vans, minivans, are commonly used for transporting people from a family. Larger vans with passenger seats are used for institutional purposes, such as transporting students. Larger vans with only front seats are often used for business purposes, to carry goods and equipment. Specially-equipped vans are used by television stations as mobile studios. Postal services and courier companies use large step vans to deliver packages.

Word origin and usage

Van meaning a type of vehicle arose as a contraction of the word caravan. The early records of van as a vehicle in English are in the mid 19th century meaning a covered wagon for transporting goods (earliest reported record 1829). Caravan with the same meaning has records since the 1670s. A caravan, meaning one wagon, had arisen as an extension or corruption of caravan meaning a convoy of multiple wagons.

Covered goods wagon

A covered goods wagon or van is a railway goods wagon which is designed for the transportation of moisture-susceptible goods and therefore fully enclosed by sides and a fixed roof. They are often referred to simply as covered wagons, and this is the term used by the International Union of Railways (UIC). Since the introduction of the international classification for goods wagons by the UIC in the 1960s a distinction has been drawn between ordinary and special covered wagons. Other types of wagon, such as refrigerated vans and goods wagons with opening roofs, are closely related to covered wagons from a design point of view.

Covered goods wagons for transporting part-load or parcel goods are almost as old as the railway itself. Because part-load goods were the most common freight in the early days of the railway, the covered van was then the most important type of goods wagon and, for example, comprised about 40% of the German railways goods fleet until the 1960s. Since then however the open wagon and flat wagon have become more common. By contrast the covered goods wagon still forms the majority of two-axled wagons in countries like Germany, because the comparatively light freight does not routinely require the use of bogie wagons.
