The Gates

The Gates were a group of gates comprising a site-specific work of art by Bulgarian artist Christo Yavacheff and French artist Jeanne-Claude, known jointly as Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The artists installed 7,503 vinyl "gates" along 23 miles (37 km) of pathways in Central Park in New York City. From each gate hung a panel of deep saffron-colored nylon fabric. The exhibit ran from February 12, 2005 through February 27, 2005.

The books and other memorabilia distributed by Christo and Jeanne-Claude refer to the project as The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979–2005 in reference to the time that passed from the artists' initial proposal until they were able to go ahead with it.

The Gates were greeted with mixed reactions. Some people loved them for brightening the bleak winter landscape and encouraging late-night pedestrian traffic in Central Park; others hated them, accusing them of defacing the landscape. It was seen as an obstruction to bicyclists, who felt that the gates could cause accidents, although cycling was not legal on those paths. The artists received a great deal of their nationwide fame as a frequent object of ridicule by David Letterman, as well as by Keith Olbermann, whose apartment was nearby.

  • At the Gates

At the Gates is a Swedish death metal band from Gothenburg, and a major progenitor of the Gothenburg sound

Initially active from 1990 to 1996, the band reformed in 2007 for a reunion tour before breaking up once again in 2008. However, they reformed for a second time in December 2010, and have since continued to perform live. The band released At War with Reality, their first album in 19 years, in late 2014.

    History

    Early career (1990–1994)

At the Gates were formed in 1990 by former members of the death/black metal band Grotesque. They recorded a debut EP, Gardens of Grief, for the Dolores record label, and sold cassettes, vinyl, and XL T-shirts to promote the recording. The EP led seminal metal label Peaceville Records to sign the band, and they released their debut full-length album, The Red in the Sky Is Ours.

After the recording of their second studio album, With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, founding member and guitarist Alf Svensson left the band in 1993 to pursue tattoo artistry, comic illustration and his solo electronic-opera-black metal project Oxiplegatz. He was soon replaced by former House of Usher guitarist Martin Larsson, who the band knew from their early tours. The band continued touring Europe, and were filmed for a Headbangers Ball special featuring a tour date in the United Kingdom in July 1994.

    The Gates

    by: Da Vinci's Notebook

Workin' on a laptop, close to the end
of a job I've been doing since half past ten
    I don't believe that it's frozen again,
    the system has gone down-o, down-o, down-o;
    I don't believe that it's frozen again,
    the system has gone down-O.
So I took it down to the help desk guy,
and I said "make it better or I'm gonna cry."
He said, "I'm sorry, your computer has died,
and the data can no longer be found-o, found-o, found-
He said, "I'm sorry your computer has died,
the data can no longer be found-O."
To the roof with the laptop I did go
over to the edge and I gave it a throw,
and when it arrived seven stories below
    it really made a mighty fine sound-o, sound-o, sound-o,
and when it arrived seven stories below,
it really made a mighty fine sound-O.
Well, that didn't do enough to ease my pain
so I went down to Dulles and I got on a plane
Sayin' "This is all Billy Gates's fault,
    and I'm gonna be trackin' him down-o, down-o, down-o."
Sayin' "This is all Billy Gates's fault,
and I'm gonna be trackin' him down-O."
Touched down in Seattle and got off the plane
Hit Starbucks to get out of the rain
Paid all of my dough for a thimble of joe
full o' foam and the cinnamon brown-o, brown-o, brown-
Paid all of my dough for a thimble of joe
full o' foam and the cinnamon brown-O.
When the Gates found out about my plan
he packed up his bag, turned tail and ran
Megalo-man took it out on the lam
    and hid way underground-o, ground-o, ground-o.
Megalo-man took it out on the lam
    and hid way underground-O.
Well the Gates been a-runnin' ever since that day,
he thinks he can hide but he can't get away.
When I finally find his little skinny behind
Gonna kick it all over this town-o, town-o, town-o.
