The Blue Moods of Spain

The Blue Moods of Spain is the debut album by Spain, released in 1995 on Restless Records.

Singles

From this album, “I Lied”, “Dreaming of Love”, and “Ray of Light” were released in some form as singles.

“Untitled #1” (for which a video was recorded) appears on the soundtracks to the films Winter Sleepers (1997), Phoenix and Somewhere in the City (both 1998).

Reception

In a review, Richie Unterberger (AllMusic) writes that "Spain succeed at evoking a brooding, late-night atmosphere", and appreciates the "seductive drones (with lots of languorous guitar/basslines and shuffle drums) and melancholy, pensive songs." However, he adds that "It's a bit monotonous all at once", and gives the album three stars.

    Vaka (song)

"untitled #1", also known as "Vaka" and released as "untitled #1 (a.k.a. "Vaka")" was Sigur Rós' 2003 single and DVD, from the October 2002 album ( ). As late as November 12, 2006, the single remained fifteenth in the Canadian singles chart, having spent a total of 16 weeks in the top 20.

The band closed their set with tracks 2 and 3 from this single during their spring 2003 tour, calling the two songs "Smáskífa" (single) on their set list. Track 2 was originally meant to be a remix of "Vaka" but it turned out into a different song altogether, although some remnants of "Vaka"'s melody can still be heard. Track 3 features a solo on piano by drummer Orri Páll Dýrason. Track 4 is the music looped before and after Sigur Rós' live shows.

The single was released as a 3" limited mini CD, 5" CD with DVD, and as a 10" limited vinyl gatefold sleeve with an artwork stencil. The 3" mini CD was only released in Europe, and is labeled as featuring a new 12 minute track though there are four separate tracks on the disc. The DVD accompanying the 5" CD contains the first three music videos the band has made: "Svefn-g-englar", "Viðrar vel til loftárása" and "Vaka". The menu screen has a video which the band shot of some birds on a wire, with track four from the single playing.

    Elijah

Elijah (Hebrew: אֱלִיָּהוּ, Eliyahu, meaning "My God is Yahu") or Elias (/ˈl.əs/; Greek: Ηλίας Elías; Syriac: ܐܸܠܝܼܵܐ Elyāe;Arabic: إلياس or إليا, Ilyās or Ilyā) was a prophet and a wonder-worker in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Ahab (9th century BC), according to the biblical Books of Kings. According to the Books of Kings, Elijah defended the worship of Yahweh over that of the Canaanite idol Baal. God also performed many miracles through him, which included raising the dead, bringing fire down from the sky, and taking him up to heaven "by a whirlwind". In the Book of Malachi, Elijah's return is prophesied "before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord", making him a harbinger of the Messiah and the eschaton in various faiths that revere the Hebrew Bible. References to Elijah appear in the New Testament, the Talmud, the Mishnah, and the Qur'an.

In Judaism, Elijah's name is invoked at the weekly Havdalah ritual that marks the end of Shabbat, and Elijah is invoked in other Jewish customs, among them the Passover seder and the Brit milah (ritual circumcision). He appears in numerous stories and references in the Haggadah and rabbinic literature, including the Babylonian Talmud.

    Elijah (oratorio)

Elijah (German: Elias), Op. 70, MWV A 25, is an oratorio written by Felix Mendelssohn. It premiered in 1846 at the Birmingham Festival. It depicts events in the life of the Biblical prophet Elijah, taken from the books 1 Kings and 2 Kings of the Old Testament.

    Music and its style

This piece was composed in the spirit of Mendelssohn's Baroque predecessors Bach and Handel, whose music he loved. In 1829 Mendelssohn had organized the first performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion since the composer's death and was instrumental in bringing this and other Bach works to widespread popularity. By contrast, Handel's oratorios never went out of fashion in England. Mendelssohn prepared a scholarly edition of some of Handel's oratorios for publication in London. Elijah is modelled on the oratorios of these two Baroque masters; however, in its lyricism and use of orchestral and choral colour the style clearly reflects Mendelssohn's own genius as an early Romantic composer.

The work is scored for four vocal soloists (bass-baritone, tenor, alto, soprano), full symphony orchestra including trombones, ophicleide, organ, and a large chorus singing usually in four, but occasionally eight or three (women only) parts. The title role is for bass-baritone and was sung at the premiere by the Austrian bass Joseph Staudigl.

Buried in ashesHead to my toes
    I got a secret I'm keeping
    And everyone knows
I got a world full of idols
And a head full of hair
And the thoughts that are in it
    Just float through the air
    Leave me alone
    I'm safe at home
    Pressing your buttons
    Blowing my cover
    Parts that are hidden
    Search and discover
    Breaking me down
    To find my genetic makeup
    I just fallen asleep
I wish I could wake up
    Leave me alone
    I'm safe at home
    Leave me alone
    I'm safe at home
    Leave me alone
