Univision

Univision (Spanish pronunciation: [uniβiˈsjo̞n]) is an American Spanish language broadcast television network that is owned by Univision Communications. The network's programming is aimed at Hispanic Americans and includes telenovelas and other drama series, sports, sitcoms, reality and variety series, news programming, and imported Spanish-language feature films. It has the largest audience of any Spanish-language television network in the world, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Univision is headquartered in New York City, and has its major studios, production facilities, and business operations in Doral, Florida (near Miami). In recent years, the network has reached viewership parity with the five major English language U.S. television networks – often placing a strong fifth in prime time and overall ratings, outranking The CW, with some fourth-place weekly placings, and as of 2012, even first-place rankings for individual programs over all five English networks due to the network's consistent schedule of new telenovelas all 52 weeks of the year.

Univisium

Univisium (macaronic Latin for "unity of images") is a proposed universal film format created by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, ASC, AIC and his son, Fabrizio, to unify all future theatrical and television movies into one respective aspect ratio of 2.00:1 (18:9). The proposed format also includes new standards for projection that maximize the efficiencies of the Univisium format.

The main proposal

In 1998, cinematographer Vittorio Storaro announced his plans for a new film format, originally to be called Univision, in an interview with International Photographer magazine. As Storaro stated in his written proposal "Recently, any movie - no matter how big or small, successful or not - will, after a very short life on the big screen, have a much longer life on an electronic screen. Today the Answer Print is made for both of these two different media. ...Having these two different media, with essentially two different aspect ratios, each of us (Directors, Production Designers, Cinematographers, Camera Operators, etc.) shares the nightmare of compromising the Composition of the Image. Looking through a viewfinder, a camera, or a monitor, we are always faced with at least two images of the same subject."

KXLN-DT

KXLN-DT, virtual channel and UHF digital channel 45, is a Univision owned-and-operated television station serving Houston, Texas, United States that is licensed to the suburb of Rosenberg. The station is owned by Univision Communications, as part of a duopoly with UniMás owned-and-operated station KFTH-DT (channel 67). The two stations share studio facilities located near the Southwest Freeway (adjacent to I-610/SH 59 Spur) on Houston's southwest side, KXLN's transmitter is located southeast of Missouri City.

History

Founded in 1984 by businessmen A.C. Peña and J. Adán Treviño, KXLN became the first Spanish-language television station in the Houston market when it first signed on the air on September 18, 1987. From the beginning, it has been affiliated with the Univision network. In September 1987, the station upgraded its transmitter to provide a full power signal, effectively expanding its coverage area to cover a larger portion of Southeast Texas. The station originally operated from studio facilities located along Kirby Drive, near the Astrodome.
