Universal Records (defunct record label)

Universal Records was a record label owned by Universal Music Group and operated as part of the Universal Motown Republic Group. The label has been dormant since 2005, due to Universal Motown and Universal Republic Records being formed and taking all of the artists from the label.

History

Founded in 1995 as Rising Tide Records, the label would ultimately begin to thrive the following year when its name was changed to Universal Records to complement the branding overhaul of the Universal Studios structure since MCA Inc. was purchased from Matsushita Electric by The Seagram Company Ltd.. The label, which is actually the second incarnation (the first one was a short-lived underground imprint of MCA Records that existed from 1988 to 1989) was created by former Universal Music Group chairman Doug Morris (who now heads Sony Music Entertainment) and Daniel Glass, who became its president.

Universal Records had success in breaking new artists, including the multi-platinum debut of Erykah Badu, Billie Myers, Goldfinger, Akon and the Lost Boyz. Glass formed relationships with independent record labels as Kedar Entertainment and Mojo Records.

Universal Records (Philippines)

Universal Records Philippines Inc. is a Filipino record label founded in 1977 as a part of Warner Music Group. Since 1992, it became independent.

History

URPI was founded in 1977 as WEA Records Philippines Inc. The company was the licensee of WEA in Philippines for 15 years, but the latter still decided to put its own office, the precursor of what is now Warner Music Philippines.

In 1992, the company adopted a new name, Universal Records Philippines Inc., and since then it rose as one of the Philippines' best and biggest record labels.

It is a member of the Philippine Association of the Record Industry.

Universal Records officially distributed K-pop albums from September 2009, to be followed by some J-pop albums which was announced late May 2011.

Currently, it is the leading independent recording company in the country, being home to some of the finest, most respected artists.
