Udaya Kumar or Udayakumar may refer to:

Udaykumar

Udaykumar (5 March 1933 – 26 December 1985) was an Indian film actor and producer in Kannada cinema, who is renowned for his quality films. He was exceptional in making movies that which were unusual and odd from other films. He was conferred with titles like 'Pavanasutha, Kala Kesari, Nata Samrat. Udaya Kumar along with Kalyan Kumar, Rajkumar were called as "Kumara Thrayaru" of the Kannada Cinema. He acted in 36 films with Rajkumar. His son Vikram Udaykumar is also an Actor. He was a good writer, who had authored many dramas and books. He differed with various other actors in character and personality.

Film career

Udayakumar debuted as an actor in the 1956 film Bhagyodaya.He acted many films in 60's. While Rajkumar kept doing analogous positive roles, Udaykumar experimented in assorted roles and also negative roles.

He acted with both Rajkumar and Kalyan Kumar in Bhoodaana, along with Leelavathi. He acted in many films from 1956 to 1983.

Udaya Kumar (designer)

Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam (Tamil: உதய குமார் தர்மலிங்கம் utaya kumār dharmaliṅkam), born 10 October 1978 in Kallakurichi, is the designer of the Indian rupee sign. His design was selected from among five short listed symbols. According to Kumar the design is based on the Indian tricolour.

He is an assistant professor at IIT Guwahati.

Personal life

Kumar is son of N. Dharmalingam, a former DMK MLA.

Academics

Kumar obtained a bachelor's degree in architecture (B.Arch) from the School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) at Anna University, Chennai in 2001. Subsequently he received his master's degree, an MDes in Visual Communication, from the Industrial Design Centre (IDC) of IIT Bombay in 2003. He also did his doctoral studies at the IDC, receiving his PhD in 2010.

Research

His areas of interest include graphic design, typography, type design and design research with special focus on Tamil typography (the subject of his doctoral research).

He has also designed a Tamil font named "Parashakti" as a mini project at the IDC, under the guidance of Prof. G. V. Sreekumar, who is one of the few font experts in the country. During his MDes project he wrote and designed a book on Tamil typography, which is the first attempt at bringing such a subject to a Tamil audience. In this book Kumar also created new Tamil terminology for many typographic terms where English words were used.
